Yup. My R1 is (rightfully) having lots of discussions about the impact of *waves hands to indicate the federal government* on junior scholars’ careers, but nothing about the impact of AI on online programs, gen ed courses, etc., in terms of the labor it’s requiring of instructors of all types.

Here’s the thing: I could probably come up with lots of creative, AI-proof online approaches. But finding the time to reflect an innovate comes at a premium. I often revamp my courses, but this is an order of magnitude much higher in redesign. AI is not a pedagogical crisis, it’s a labor crisis.

Our brains were better at navigation because we did it more often. We had to pay attention to road signs, backtrack sometimes, and yes, talk to complete strangers. But we carried more knowledge in our heads and had more capabilities than we do now. (Now extrapolate this to genAI...)

I think if you are (like me) concerned about declining American social life and its broader impacts, then you have to take WFH seriously as an input. That's not to say five-day RTO is the solution—flexible hybrid schedules are the way to go—but we should be more honest about the real tradeoffs.

It’s not transit in CA. People don’t ride bikes to get places here. Very different than other places. It’s a mode for exercise here. You’ll never meet someone who “biked here.” They will tell you how many miles they biked the other day though.
