It feels pretty great to be asked by a client to build another bass - especially given that the client “can’t play [his] Fenders anymore” after receiving his first bass from me. This Jazz-style bass will have a one-piece walnut body, birdseye-figured rock maple neck, and Mun ebony fretboard.

I’m old enough to recognize only one of these artists.
Cannot imagine how upset Billy Corgan is that he has to say "I wanna thank Sidepiece and everybody stick around for Mustard" tonight. He must be so mad he has to say two band names that are dumber than his own.
Nice to see the three guitars Doug Irwin built for Jerry together here. My uncle worked with Doug back in the early days of Alembic. Also, I have some spectacular pieces of quilted maple and cocobolo squirreled away for building tributes to Wolf and Tiger.
"Jerry believed music should be shared and understood the power of community. There’s no better expression of that than Jerry Day – free live music, beautiful outdoor spaces, and people coming together in the neighborhood where he grew up. Trixie Garcia Jerry Garcia Family
“Trump has rejected disaster aid for Democratic-run states at the highest rate in the 47-year history of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.” Right now people in blue states are basically paying federal taxes as if they’re colonized territories of red states. www.politico.com/news/2026/03...
I finally got around to building a Corsi-Rosenthal box, and am looking forward to the improved air quality it will provide.
From the govt. of Alberta's own "Data centre approvals and oversite" page (URL in ALT): "Residents may have opportunities to provide input through municipal planning and approval processes." Which, in Alberta-speak, means we aren't actually guaranteed *any* input with respect to these decisions.
Alberta electricity companies are telling the public data centres will save Albertans money. But the companies are telling investors they'll triple electricity costs. An investigation by @rorywh.bsky.social
With the temperature and humidity swings of the last few days, dimensioning wood for guitar necks isn’t in the cards today. Instead, I’ve stripped down this Photomic FTn metering head for the Nikon F I purchased from @rustypants.com to see whether cleaning the resistor ring gets it working again.

The Villeneuve Airport (ZVL) makes a good turnaround point for a ‘pedal therapy’ session.
Not at all surprising that the online form Alberta has launched to gather public feedback on bike lanes includes only negative impacts in the drop-down menu. The form can’t be submitted without selecting one - which guarantees that they’ll be able to crow about “overwhelmingly negative feedback.”

Yikes. Go outside. Listen to music. Create something beautiful. Have a good day, y’all.
Alrighty guitar lovers, I’m starting a new project: a built-to-spec guitar in the style of a Telecaster Custom. Some deets: ☞ One-piece swamp ash body ☞ Rock maple neck ☞ Fretboard wood t.b.d. (ebony, pau ferro, or maple) ☞ Stratocaster neck pickup ☞ Humbucker bridge pickup
It’s been a couple of years (which included a couple of moves) since I’ve made any progress on making guitars, but today I’m finally making sawdust in my new workshop. First task: touching up the neck pocket of my Jazzmaster-style build.
Happy Canada Day, folks. I’m celebrating it as one does: by making Mexican food for dinner. A favourite is fried rice; it’s also appropriately red-and-white in the early stages (left), when there’s just oil, onion, garlic, rice, and red bell pepper in the pan. Later (right), not so much.
Today I developed the 18 4x5 negatives that have been chillin’ in my fridge: 9 each of @ilfordphoto.com’s HP5+ and FP4+. The first 16 were relatively low-contrast scenes (Bow Glacier; pack ice on the North Saskatchewan River), so I developed them normally in D-76, mixed from chemicals here at home.
TFW you arrange your darkroom chemicals to be used right-to-left, but then go ahead and pour the leftmost beaker into the dev tank first.

With one fell swoop, my Rolleiflex 3.5 (E1) kit is complete: yesterday I picked up this set, which includes a lens hood, two close-up lens pairs (Rolleinar 1 & 2), and yellow, orange, red, green, and UV filters - all of which fit in a tidy little leather case.
I'm working from home today, and just got back from a walk around the neighbourhood with Logan. A block from my house, a consortium of magpies, blue jays, and crows was making an absolute racket.
It’s a rainy day in Edmonton, so I’m doing rainy day things. First up, cleaning up a ~1959-1969 Wagner Ware No. 8 10-1/2” cast iron skillet. It’s in really nice shape (aside from some very minor surface rust), and so all that’s needed here is some light sanding, followed by re-seasoning.
Hey Edmontonians! From our perspective, the Moon will occlude Venus at 18:58:58 UTC (12:58:58 MDT); Venus will reappear exactly one hour later, at 19:58:58 UTC (13:58:58 MDT). If you're *not* in Edmonton, you might find your local transit time here:

With the rise of self-driving vehicles, it’s only a matter of time before we get a country song where a guy’s truck leaves him too.
I’ve listened to this 7/2/89 rendition of “Dear Mr. Fantasy”>”Hey Jude” more than a dozen times today - while weeding the yard, changing my motorcycle’s oil, etc. Brent Mydland takes flight with his vocals and B-3, and the whole band soars with him. What I wouldn’t give to see them play again!
