As much as this is a water planet, our Earth is also a fire planet. Every continent (except Antarctica) has fire seasons. Climate change and mismanagement have made fire risk and fire danger worse. We can make it better, while still holding onto fire as a needed treatment for the land.

I-95 is closed in coastal Georgia due to a new wildfire in Camden County. It missed the rain today and blew out as multiple outflow boundaries passed through. South Georgia has seen a recent re-emergence of drought indicators due to the hot and dry July.

The fire is occurring along 1-95, shutting it down due to smoke. 30-day standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index over South Georgia and north Florida. Low precip and hot temps have caused dryness to reemerge in areas of longer term drought.

The Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) also shows that year-to-date the wildfires in Canada are near average and much less than extreme fire year 2023: ciffc.net/situation/20...

Great news despite the widespread lightning this morning. Fires in Minnesota and just across the border are picking up soaking rain. RAWS weather obs are missing nationally, but radar estimates are anywhere from a quarter inch to 2”+. Will help reduce smoke production for a bit.

As the Great Lakes & eastern seaboard experience ongoing smoke events from hundreds of actively burning Canadian wildfires, here are recent NASA and NOAA imagery showing smoke & fire locations. Smoke events will be likely to co-occur throughout the summer. Smoke, like 🔥, is a global issue.

Get ready for dark skies and extremely poor air quality in the Great Lakes and Northeast. Most of the smoke from the fires in Minnesota and Ontario is aloft this morning and circulating around the heat dome. That likely changes by Wednesday.

Early in my career I lived and worked in Ann Arbor. Two streets from my rental (not far from the Big House), there was a man who had written over every outward facing part of his dwelling his delusions, accusations, and hate. That’s what 1/3 of social media reminds me of now.

I’m in eastern Kentucky for a family 4th of July and in a span of 2 minutes I moved an eastern box turtle off a road, then saw whitetail deer & a flock of wild turkeys. If the blackberries don’t cure in the heat dome, I’ll make blackberry dumplings tomorrow from the wild bushes. Lord, it’s hot 🥵.
