A few have suggested that some aspects of this mission--joy, international teamwork, diversity--are being played up to stick it to the hateful attitude of the administration. But I don't think it's that. I think it's just that those things are essential to and inseparable from a mission like this.

So many of my Jewish friends in urban areas tell me that they need security at their synagogues because of the constant undercurrent of threats and violence, most of which never make it to the news. You should not need a security guard to go to your place of worship.

When we were taught the "first they came" poem, I'm pretty sure the intended lesson was somewhere between "don't let other kids be bullied" and "stand up for your principles in general", not "here's what you need to do when your government is corrupted by fascists and starts abducting people."

Here's the thing, Greg — free speech is still protected by the First Amendment under the Constitution. If you want folks to stop saying you're the secret police who are kidnapping and killing people, maybe stop acting like the secret police who are kidnapping and killing people.
