I asked a trusted colleague for comments on a written document and they fed it in to chatGPT and sent me back that output and I just want to cry. Guess I won't be asking that person for help or advice on anything anymore. Enshittification happens in people's writing skills too, I guess. I also […]

Through @CoMaps , I discover @mangroveReviews which looks very interesting. https://mangrove.reviews/search?sub=urn%3Aisbn%3A9782889790098&q=bikepunk Which leads me to @OpenLibrary , which I should definitely contribute to. (my books are under CC By-SA, can I upload them?) […]

The second anniversary of this post is coming up, and surprise surprise these little "end of life" laptops are continuing to run well with #linux and do what we need then to, which includes spending less on tech so we can buy more actual books for the school […] [Original post on mastodonapp.uk]
this week I learned that during a merge conflict, you can get a list of all commits involved in the conflict that touched a file with: $ git log --merge FILENAME Seems super useful if there are a lot of commits being merged (like in a big rebase) but only a couple of them touched that file
If I don't keep my car roadworthy and crash into yours, it hasn't gone "rogue", it's my negligence and I'm responsible. If my dog attacks you, I am liable. There are no rogue AIs, just negligent AI companies. Prosecute them.

I don't get the argument that public institutions "have to be where people are". Why? Pornhub has about the same amount of monthly active users as X. No one thinks our EU commissioners or the Swedish parliament must be on Pornhub. In the pre-socials era no one expected the prime minister to […]

Is there a QR code generator that 1. is a website 2. is free, no account needed 3. is not secretly also a link shortener 4. does not look like a scam 5. does not include extra branding (the way the Chrome one does) a friend just asked me this and I really could not find one
Today we had the most unusual PhD defense of my career. Leon Houben fell 15 m in the Alps, landing on his head and loosing his memory while working on his PhD thesis. When he met me again, he had to google me. He had to re-learn everything and wrote two more […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
If walking costs you $1, we all pay $0.01. If biking costs you $1, we all pay $0.08. If bussing costs you $1, we all pay $1.50. If driving costs you $1, we all pay $9.20. Via study that still underestimates climate cost. This isn’t about choice. It’s about who pays for your choice. #citymakingmath

I'm concerned that the EU Citizens' Initiative to stop online age verification regulation only has 14K signatures out of a required 1M. Please sign if you are a EU citizen: https://eci.ec.europa.eu/066/public I am all-in on the idea that social media is (on balance) harmful, including to […]

There are clearly many reasons why people are switching to Vivaldi. Interestingly, my little survey shows that the top reasons have more to do with our values than particular features. The #1 reason (77%) is the fact that we do not have built in AI. #2 is […] [Original post on social.vivaldi.net]

I sometimes feel the need to repeat again and again that the EU is very good at developing technology but is bad at creating commercial monopolies out of it. And it is a f*** good thing! We don’t want an "European Google" https://ploum.net/2026-01-22-why-no-european-google.html
We abandoned it because the joke had pretty much run its course, but full auto "agents" are still wandering into the AgentPipe honeypot. Despite the arrival of AGI, the quality leaves much to be desired

I looked up NZ's road statistics so far for 2026. 17,635 road injuries resulting in ACC claims. 221 people dead. All just this year. Instead we're fretting about e-scooters being dangerous and needing more regulation. (Perhaps they do, but they're not the […] [Original post on mastodon.nz]
