bog standard nyc arts grouch

I legitimately don’t understand why Talking Heads/Byrne have had this immense reputational glowup among the under-45s, while the Police/Sting aren’t even on the radar. (Maybe if Ezra Koenig drops a “Synchronicity II” reference somewhere.)

some recent Sting discourse led me to try something today I have not done in decades: to listen, risking madness, sequentially to the Sting solo albums as far as I can, with ears as open as possible

I am so excited for there to be 3 different, unrelated movies called "Bad Lieutenant" where the only throughline is that they're about A Cop who Smokes Crack directed by the patron saints of Mentally Ill Guy filmmaking

It’s hard to explain but tv was better when you couldn’t watch the show you wanted whenever you wanted to watch it and most of the shows were worse and the TVs were worse and the entire experience was worse, that’s when it was better

Since we’re relitigating 2020 (again): in Feb 2020, when Covid was starting to spread in the US but before we “locked” anything “down,” it was crystal clear to me that our national response would be a protracted, confused mess w/ a lot of selfishness and bad faith. We are not the village it takes.

I was thinking just before I saw the thread that I’d love a 33 1/3 on Joe Jackson’s “Night and Day” even though there’s almost no market for one these days — but I wanna know more about the glockenspiel on “Steppin’ Out”! I wanna know about his pasty arse bopping around NYC to salsa percussionists.

You have a month to write a 33 1/3 book about the album of your choice. Which record are you going to write about? (No previously covered albums allowed; new shit must come to light: see below.) (For all books in the series: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/33_1/3) (H/t @monostich.bsky.social

Found today at Alabaster Books: the Fall 1987 “In Search of New York” issue of Dissent. Almost as definitively a “yes pls” as the Jonathan Mahler book from last year.
