The action on which he was convicted as a criminal had been just that: smiling at another man. So it is very plausible that, while he did like to go cruising, on this specific occasion the allegation against Joe was entirely fabricated by a police force who viciously hunted down queer people. +

What followed were Meek being publicly outed & branded as a criminal in the press, blackmailed & beaten up, living in constant fear he would loose his family or make them pariahs in their little hometown should they too find out, & becoming increasingly closed off & paranoid. +
