“Owing to the difficulty of distinguishing the letter "S" by telephone, the international distress signal "S.O.S." will give place to the words "May-day", the phonetic equivalent of "M'aidez", the French for "Help me."” —"New Air Distress Signal," The Times [London], 2 Feb. 1923

If eels have an archenemy, it herons. Chaucer, in his poem "Parliament of Fowls", calls the heron as the "eel foe." Here, for your Tuesday, is a 15th C. image of an eel in distress, being eaten by a saucy, goat-footed heron wearing a bishop's mitre. May this never happen to you! 🗃️🧪

5th century fancy capital showing a cloven-hoofed heron wearing a bishop's fancy hat, and holding an eel in it's beak. The heron's body is blue & furry, but still very heron-like in it's shape. The miter is gold, with wee little pearls; clearly this bishop-heron presides over a wealthy see, & he likes to show off. It feels to me like his name is something like Oswhynaut, and I suspect that all the other herons find him a bit much. He is unlikely to get invited to heron parties, though he's probably the type who just invites himself.

The eel is twisting around to look back at the heron as if it can't quite believe what it's seeing. And can you blame it? You'd be shocked, too.

It's possible that the eel -- we'll call her Volturna -- is about to rise up and wrap tightly around the heron's neck. It depends on whether she paid attention in her Krav Maga classes. If she does, she might yet live to see another day.

And then what a story she'll have to tell!

Good morning! Here is a three-day old sea-otter pup, snoozing on their Mama. The image is by one my favourite wildlife photographers, Suzi Eszterhas, who runs girlswhoclick.org - an organisation that mentors girls and young women interested in nature photography. Feel free to share.

A little fuzzy, dark brown sea-otter pup, sleeping peacefully on top of their Mama's belly, as she floats on her back.

Eigentlich atemberaubend, wie man überhaupt auf die Idee kommen kann, eine Erkrankung, die massenhaft nach einer Infektion mit einem neu aufgetreteten Virus auftritt, sei psychosomatisch.
