Russia's military capacity has been a conundrum for Europe for centuries. It's greatest triumphs - 1812 onwards & WW2 - come from counter-attacks when the space & weather of the homeland crippled the aggressor Ukraine had shown Russia's inability to effectively 'aggress.' So difficult to plan

With Russia at the door and the US backing away, Europe has to build its own ‘way of war’

Even in a Europe-focused Nato 3.0, Washington would still want to call the shots. We need an insurance policy, says Guardian Europe columnist Nathalie Tocci

I totally disagree, he apparently felt so strongly about defence funding he was prepared to resign and oust a sitting Labour PM. In my world nobody, whoever they are, gets to ditch their principles because they're now in a different job. These people run the country, it's not an office job.

A few weeks ago John Healey resigned from Starmer's cabinet because he was unhappy with defence spending. He's now Chancellor in Burnham's cabinet, begs the question why his first policy announcement hasn't been to increase defence spending. Maybe his resignation wasn't about spending, who knew.

Changing your football team is both, IMHO, both impossible & morally reprehensible But I switch cricket allegiances depending on which county I am in - hence Sussex, then Kent, Essex... I think this reflects that, whrn it comes to cricket, I am fundamentally an England fan

Jenrick tells the Reform UK press conference this morning an official will come to your dying mother's bedroom to tot up her jewellery, confiscate her brooches and itemise her coats under Andy Burnham's new tax. Is there not a danger of just sounding so alarmist that you sound unhinged?

Who cares about £millions in fraudulent undeclared donations to Reform UK MPs by convicted criminals, and their anti-worker, anti-women, anti-disabled policies, when there's a good scare story about made-up terrorists to spread ... meme Philip Sturtivant

And what happens when the next PM wants to set up government in their home city, it's performative nonsense. Absolutely move some government departments around the country where possible but the heart of most governments around the world is in the capital city for sensible reasons.
