A few weeks ago John Healey resigned from Starmer's cabinet because he was unhappy with defence spending. He's now Chancellor in Burnham's cabinet, begs the question why his first policy announcement hasn't been to increase defence spending. Maybe his resignation wasn't about spending, who knew.

I've worked out why the media is being kind to Burnham, they need to justify their role in ousting Starmer. This is why they allow Burnham to announce existing policies as new and haven't said a word about the problems facing Jodrell Bank or the continuing hints about oil licences.

The i front page talks about the Burnham bounce, no mention of farage and to a certain extent Polanski's bubble bursting. But they have to justify their role in oustinf Starmer.

Just been told off and presumably muted by someone because I'm not a Burnham fan, which apparently means I want him to fail. Seems it was fine to constantly criticise Starmer and demand he steps down but god forbid I'm not a cheerleader for Burnham before he's actually done anything of note. 🤔

My twopenneth on the media Burnham relationship. The media were instrumental in the hatred aimed at Starmer, they wanted him gone and the PLP obliged. They'll be nice to Burnham for now to avoid being labelled anti Labour but they'll turn on him very soon IMHO, other opinions are available.

For anyone interested: 'In the 2026 Mais Lecture, the Chancellor announced a roadmap to fiscal devolution, including tax sharing of income tax to regional leaders across England' (Centre for Cities, 26 June 2026). This is a Labour Government plan set in train by the previous administration.

To be clear, my issue comes from the coverage by the media. There is a double standard in the way they treat women compared to how they treat men. I note that we haven't had any journalists come out and question John Healy's credentials for Chancellor of the Exchequer, and we all know why that is.
