This is Tommy. Tommy had a question about my allegiances. Listen to the end to hear about his.

What'll happen first: a small modular nuclear reactor or a leeds tram
I've been hearing about small modular nuclear reactors since the 1990s. The UK is planning the first operational one in Europe...in the late 2030s. 40 years! The world's first commercial reactor, the UK's Calder Hall, opened in 1956. In 1916 Einstein had just solved general relativity.

Turns out there are acceptable uses of AI in academia
I got a "theory" recently whose owner admitted to AI assistance. Out of curiousity I fed it to Claude with the prompt "you are an expert in theoretical early universe cosmology and you have been asked to critique this paper" and the output was brutal. So I sent the prompt and told to roll his own.
for personal reasons i dislike how the discourse has swung from "climate scientists are hysterical alarmists" to "climate scientists failed to warn us how bad it would be" without stopping at "thank you, you were right, here's a gift basket"
It's Day 1 of Andy Burnham being Prime Minister & Donald Trump is celebrating the destruction of our planet. Meanwhile Spain doubled it's renewables - before they had some of the highest bills in Europe and now some of the lowest bills. Labour need to stop appealing to Trump.

Alternatively, can @ucu.org.uk/ @drjogrady.bsky.social use her next statement to say "The DfE will give you the exact same statement as they have done for months. It's concerning that they're so failing in their responsibility. It still is their responsibility even if they refuse to acknowledge it."
At which point are journalists allowed to say "nope, that's not an answer. You're failing in your duties by repeating this very obvious deflection for two years in a row. You need to give an actual response now."? Or else publish just "the DfE said the same thing they did for 24 months".
I have no particular dog in this fight so I'm just loving the drama
WELCOME TO SCHISM WATCH 2026 WITH CLAIRE
It's not 1536, but Anne Boleyn has taken over the news. Recently a team of computer scientists, electrical engineers and a historical novelist think they have discovered the “true face” of Anne (& her mother) by applying AI-based computational facial recognition to Holbein sketches. The catch? /1
They’re at it again. None of this is valuable historical research. It’s about exploiting historical artifacts and historians to develop computer vision further and to make a soft cultural argument for surveillance tech. This nonsense has been going on since c2010.

“1 mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, 1 mile driving is a $.20 loss.” “Which means that Copenhagen, a city of 1.2 million people, saves $357 million a year on health costs because something like 80% of its population commutes by bike.” The #’s may vary, but the truth is the same.
One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss
Copenhagen, the bicycle-friendliest place on the planet, publishes a biannual Bicycle Account, and buried in its pages is a rather astonishing fact.

Just joined UK’s Green Party for a few reasons. Starmer himself suggested ppl like me leave the Labour Party when he assumed leadership. Request granted. But the Greens’ recent success & polling (and more importantly their policy goals!) show them to be robust & viable. join.greenparty.org.uk
