Thoughts again today with Grant Shapps, the spreadsheet whizz who ran James Cleveley's leadership campaign
He'll be an antisemitism advisor. Tbf he is very good at i
In a post on X he says he’ll instead be advising the Conservative Party on how young men become radicalised
Kemi has seized control of the news agenda, getting more attention for her party than its had in ages. Downing Street awaits
Wonderful, this is all going so well
If it's true that Number 10 has banned the DVSA from raising driving test prices by £30 that's the dumbest shit I've read all week £30 is less than the cost of *one hour of driving lessons*
Why is it still harder to book a driving test than get Glastonbury tickets? Our latest substack looks at why the driving test backlog still hasn't been fixed six years after the pandemic - and argues the real obstacle isn't logistics, it's politics.
This is just such a mental incident? It's one thing for him to slip through the cracks, another for the party leader to actively support him??
It doesn't say much for the Conservative Party that this is the quality of candidate who wants to stand for them now—and that they're willing to defend his selection.
This is legitimately fascinating because you *can* make a musical out of anything, and well known properties do have an inherent advantage- see Groundhog day or Mean Girls! - but Trainspotting?? That's a reach And apparently not very good
“The current economic climate has resulted in lower than expected ticket sales” www.rollingstone.co.uk/music/trains...
They hold philosophers in too high esteem and they are very smart idiots
has anybody written a good book on *why* this kind of thing was worse in France than elsewhere?
sometimes when i'm on the top deck of bus i like to let myself sway with the motion and imagine i'm on a horse in late 19th century nebraska, taking a long journey between pioneer farms

Which historic figure would be the most prolific poster and why would it be Robespierre
*turning the hot take machine up to 12* Marx and Will Stancil would have the exact same social media and presence, except that Marx would be 10-12 times worse to women and minorities

Sleep well sweet prince, Eric Adams, unappreciated in your time
Could the answer to reducing rats in New York City really be as simple as putting garbage into trash cans? Yes, actually.
Find it difficult to find something more labourbrained and silly than blaming Michael Gove's education reforms (he left the DfE in 2014 btw) for 2026 youth unemployment
Reminder that Attlee was in favour of keeping rationing, he thought it led to a fairer society
True. Aneurin Bevan saw this clearly, fearing that the availability of more consumer goods would mean "the individual citizen is made all the more reluctant to see his income taken away from him for remote purposes." (In Place of Fear, p134). His solution to this has fallen out of favour.
Underrated chance of being PM, if you're a billion pound company why wouldn't you want to make connections and at the very least hedge your bets

Deeply depressing to see a minority of lefty types turn against universal education during the pandemic. No! Traditionally you're the lot against sending the kids down the mines!
What I will say about Rod Liddle is how it's interesting he built an Online Presence in a way similarly polemicists didn't? Richard Littlehouse and Melanie Phillip's are still around and still writing, but you don't notice them unless you physically buy a paper?
Lads, everywhere has outliers and averages. If you have somewhere as left wing as Bristol Central, you're going to have somewhere as right wing as Clacton
Clacton By-Election Voting Intention: ➡️ RFM: 73% (+27) 🗑️ CBF: 20% (New) 🟥 REC: 2% (New) ⚫ Others: 5% (-49) Via @survation.bsky.social, 16-24 Jul. Changes w/ GE2024.
Aside from anything else, this is a fantastic example of the 'email each other our intentions to do illegal behaviour' school of white collar crime

bought a new head for the mop, a new suitcase and a scraper for my hob this week and I'm now on such a boring purchase high, what else is incredibly boring and available to buy, I want to keep this party going
Fun fact: some of the last troops fighting for Hitler in Berlin were the 'SS Charlemagne' brigade because they knew they'd be shot as nazi traitor scum by the French state if caught. They weren't elite, just fascists

He's right and he should say it. Education is the greatest tool for combating poverty and increasing social mobility ever invented, and stopping it is devastating for vulnerable kids
There are working class and vulnerable kids who will never have the life they should have had because of school closures. Let’s address that too, shall we?
Foucault: "schools serve the same societal function as prisons and mental institutions." Foucault's Mum: "you're still going."
It's made me think more about the non-academic purposes of schools...
