A highlight for June would be the flowers of the ‘Mexican hat plant’ Ratibida columnifera. A new annual for me this year #GardensHour
@gardenshour.bsky.social Evening #GardensHour I’ve cut back and mulched around some of the ferns, and they’re rewarding me with some new tentacle-like growth
One of the biggest gardening challenges is staying patient. So very nearly there with the tulips #GardensHour
Gardeners beware! 🪴🌷❄️ If you've already put tender plants outdoors, you may want to cover them or bring them inside. A widespread frost is expected tonight with ice possible on surfaces left damp after evening showers 🌡️
Trying out growing garlic Arno in cells first this year. Once they have a good root system they can go out into the garden #GardensHour
I think the Cosmos is now looking the best it has this year. The Cannas in the background will stay out until the frost arrives #GardensHour
Mahonia ‘Soft Caress’ is starting to flower. It’s a useful plant - a lot smaller & softer than your average Mahonia #GardensHour
I’ve brought a few chillis & sweet peppers inside to avoid the cold night. The days are still quite warm though here - 19 & 20 deg C this week #GardensHour
We’re having some very cold nights now so the red Banana, Ensete Maurellii is dug up, potted up & coming inside of an evening. Warm days still though so it goes outside during the day #GardensHour
Lots of new growth on the Cycas revoluta Cycad. Amazing to think that these plants were around at the time of the dinosaurs #GardensHour
Any Apple suggestions for Daphne ? #GardensHour
The Greensleeves apples are looking good on my beloved 20 (ish) year old tree from Woolworths. I'm thinking of getting another apple tree to grow in a big container (old half whiskey barrel) - any recommendations for good dwarf varieties? 🍏 #GardensHour #SixWeeksOfColour
Evening all on #GardensHour tonight. Thankful for the little rain we’ve had recently. The Cosmos & Cannas are appreciative!
I was going to do a (late) Chelsea Chop on these Phlox today, but saw these little critters & decided against - Ladybird larvae #GardensHour
Paulownia tomentosa coppiced over the weekend. Within a couple of months it’ll have huge tropical leaves as a result #GardensHour Before & After
‘Eagle Wings’ Tulips are beginning to flower. It’s a late Parrot variety , about 40cm tall #GardensHour
Lots of blossom on the Apollo Rocket patio apple tree this year so I’m hoping for a bumper crop #GardensHour
Whilst the heart-shaped leaves of Epimedium are lovely, if you don’t cut them back now they’ll obscure the even lovelier flowers which appear soon
Blow, northern wind; fall snow; And thou—my loved and dear, See, in this waste of burthened cloud How Spring is near!
Hello Hellebore! Once the old leaves are removed the flowers are much more visible & the danger of leaf spot is reduced
