Keith David’s reaction to receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. So deserved! Thank you for your work and impact! 👏
No number can encapsulate a feeling, let alone a potentially complex weaving of feelings So no number can ever really mean anything about art
The only benefit to scores is avgs, and those are just as bad An average of 3 means something incredibly different if it's every reviewer scored it near 3 vs they all went either 1 or 5 And then, until reading individual reviews, who's taste aligns enough with yours that the avg is worth anything?
Adding to the hating on review scores, agreed on these points, but also, they're useless You give a game a 4, what does that mean? Does every 4 look the same to you? The answer is bound to be, no. The score needs to be contextualized. It's meaningless without the explanation, so, what's the point?
100% agree with Jordan here. One thing I’ll add is that review scores contribute to these kinds of lazy, reductionist conversations about art, which is why I loathe them.

Movies Don’t Need Reviews. They Need Something Else.
Reviews are about the writer as much as the art itself.

Review scores, frame rate, sales, player counts, price, etc. It all just feels like this nerd impulse to use Objective Math to avoid the uncomfortable realities of discussing subjective art. Annoyingly stockholder brained, too

“Some people might look down on Worm’s mechanics and call it immoral. But it’s immoral to let a sucker keep his money.”
The Mario Galaxy Movie reminds me of the scene from Rounders where Matt Damon and Edward Norton hustled a group of frat boys, openly pulling tricks they’d never do anywhere else www.youtube.com/watch?v=kN2I...
Has it been long enough to criticize the Mario movie without people saying “iTs a kiDs mOviE” or “jUsT eNjOy iT”? It’s an affront to storytelling so blatant that it almost feels like the raptors testing the fences
Does anyone have evidence to suggest teams are blackballing Natasha Cloud for her politics? Or is this just speculation people accept in Earth-616 for content?
Had a moment listening to music with my daughter last night where I realized music singles don’t exist anymore. She had no concept of the idea. (I know they technically still exist, but not in the way I traditionally think of them as “the songs on the radio and with music videos.”
Just to update on this: I’ll start interviews for this next week and respond to freelancer emails this week. Between here and LinkedIn, I have more than enough apps and emails that’ll take me the week to sift through. Thanks for the shares and connections, looking forward to meeting folks

I think the biggest damage to the art community was the obsolescence of gallery sites (y!, deviantart, etc) and the rise of scroll-by social media, like twitter and even tumblr. Art is not ''content'', you shouldnt need to post art every day (or every month!) to be relevant. This mindset sucks.
I'm also looking for consumer tech freelancers with hands-on expertise in the dark web, home improvement, or VPNs. Rates vary based on the article, but happy to discuss more, if interested: jordan.calhoun@ziffdavis.com, subject line "Tech Freelancer - [your area of expertise]"

I feel this should go without saying, but please don’t search for my personal email address online and message me there. I try to keep my life organized, and that kind of thing doesn’t help either of us

used to be like "ha ha how could people fall for snake oil" and now it's like "oh everyone falls for every kind of snake oil possible all the time including billionaires and politicians, just guzzling up snake oil at a horrifically alarming rate and vomiting out onto the rest of us" 🫠🙃
