Hunter: The Reckoning - Day For Night. Coming soon! The old Hollywood is dying & the new Hollywood struggles to be born. Click through to the thread below to meet some of the nasty little monsters you'll meet as you hunt bloodsuckers on the streets of Los Angeles. (Some of whom are romanceable...)

Gabe Cross was one of the biggest action stars of the late '80s. Then an accident on set ended his career. Now he's back, more than thirty years later. He hasn't aged a day. He has a message for Hollywood, a gospel to preach. You don't need to age. You don't need to die. You can embrace eternity.

A man with feathered '80s hair wears a red suit and tie and holds out his hands like a megachurch preacher giving a sermon.

Hunter: The Reckoning - Day For Night is coming out next month. So I think it's about time I introduce folks to some of the characters. Watch this thread as I roll them out before the release.

I think a lot about a @janeespenson.bsky.social story where in a pitch meeting, she described a space battle as 'bugs trying to take down a groundhog'. Getting that laugh was good even if the scene wasn't meant to be funny. Laughs are a sign an audience intuitively understands a story or a system.

don’t hold me to this because I do not have the time (nor does probably anyone I would solicit for this) but I would love to put together a book of articles on comedy through systemic design

For the past several years I have been trying to write a 1.3 million word interactive novel on contract while also being the creative director of an ambitiously scaled live service game and the main lesson that I've taken from this experience is: probably do not do that

Nobody makes sentences like Dashiell Hammett. Reading a story where he describes a man as being "small-boned and plump", with a "smooth, meaningless face" and the way he can do a thing like that off-handed really sticks out.

Wife and I rewatching Buffy and going through this. Must have been nuts watching some of these shows in the '90s, maybe at first thinking "Ah, it looks silly but it's an okay way to spend a Tuesday night" and then like a season in they start going on these absolutely generational storytelling runs.

Rewatching Farscape in 2026 is a hell of a trip. A low-budget science fiction show carries so much more weight with snappy writing and good characters. Feels like a lot of people have lost their way, creatively.

I watched some Ron Popeil infomercials and was absolutely rocked by the psychosociological implications of this image. Your hands are Clean! Your hands are Clean!

A photo of Ron Popeil. He is wearing an orange apron and holding up his hands to demonstrate they are clean. The photo is labelled "Your hands are Clean!"

The Ed Wood line "Filmmaking is not about the tiny details. It's about the big picture!" haunts me in my dreams because I have to say some variation on it constantly as a director in games and it is both broadly true but you can see immediately how anyone could misapply it.

The process of moving into a new place this month and rebuilding my life as a person living solo for the first time in over a decade has been expensive and hard. If you've been thinking about picking up any of my games, this would be a great time to go for it. store.buriedwithoutceremony.com

Jersey Girl was on last night. Fascinating watch. So close to being a passable romcom but has all these weird problems. Every scene too long. Scenes repeat the same info. Affleck all over the place. Way too much time with J Lo just to set up her death. Random VO from the daughter: whose POV is this?

Watched Fritz Lang's M for the first time. What an incredible movie. Peter Lorre is unbelievable. I didn't realize that his Hollywood career was basically a self-parody.

I started playing Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader and I love this. Is this how I find out I like Warhammer? The world and characters are so extra. It's really fun.

“What’s the biggest trap in game writing-“ (Grabbing the mic) “Specificity.” “But the forbidden cave IS 5 miles north of here.” (gripping the mic with both hands, kicking my attackers away) “We write in kilometers, the cave was moved last week, and it’s not forbidden anymore, let GO of me.”

There should be some sort of German term for the experience of reaching the director level in a video game studio and finding suddenly that all of the understanding of nuance, complexity, and context that helped get you there is now in some weird sense a hindrance.

Some say that the point of a to-do list isn't to get everything on the to-do list done, but to get more done than you would have without the to-do list. I say that what you don't understand is if I don't check off everything on the to-do list i might die or something i dunno

In January, my wife & I spent a lovely day in Montmartre just as it got hit by a huge snowstorm. I've never been a big travel guy, but watching Parisian school children pelt each other with snowballs and people slide down icy streets fundamentally rewired me. It was magical. Still thinking about it.

I'm playing the Mad Max game from 2015 and honestly -- very fun! The fact that this wasn't received well at the time kind of shows how wildly inflated expectations have been for games since like 2014 or so.

I was at the AGO earlier looking at Tom Thomson paintings and some kids walked by and complained that Canadian art is just trees and like yeah true but is there any more worthwhile subject, what's so great and special about anything else

Rolled credits on Esoteric Ebb. What a lovely game. I laughed a lot. Something about Ink as a scripting language really lends itself to humour, doesn't it? I feel like I can always tell when something was made using Ink.

I don't know how anybody can listen to 3D Country, Heavy Metal, & Getting Killed and say Cameron Winter is a bad singer. Like listen to Cowboy Nudes or I See Myself. He's a very technically good singer who purposely uses his voice in unusual ways. Maybe have some curiosity about why he's doing that?

Esoteric Ebb has a kind of joke that you can really only do in games writing, which is the continual inappropriate confusing dialogue choice that becomes funny when you pick it enough times, like asking every single person you meet who they're voting for in the election.
