I'm writing a bunch of deeply weird flash fiction about birds and I am loving it.

Dr. Pullen & her TA Fidil recommend The Changeling Sea by Patricia McKillip. They'd never heard of this novella before & were delighted to discover a used copy at their local bookstore. McKillip's gorgeous prose conjures the feeling of a folktale, unknowably old, rediscovered. #purrfectreads
In the 2006 science fiction novel 'Rainbow's End' by Vernor Vinge, he had AIs shredding books as they ingested them at scale. Threw me out of the story, because obviously that would never happen IRL. 😑
This is undeniably, deeply unethical and awful. futurism.com/artificial-i...
I'm back from my trip home to the NW. It was so wonderful to spend time with friends and family in the glorious outdoors of my home turf of WA (and also OR).
What are your favorite contemporary fantasy novels (in this case, meaning fantasy novels set in the 21st century) for adults of the last two years?

I'm writing some really weird micro-fiction about birds, and my brain feels on fire with it. I can't wait for some of these pieces to be in the world.
Dr. Pullen & her TA Fidil recommend Written on the Dark by @guygavrielkay.bsky.social. This book was the treat she saved herself to binge at the end of the semester. Kay is one of our finest prose stylists & a spinner of enrapturing tales. His newest historical fantasy is perfection. #purrfectreads
I went to Vermont for the first time for a college roomie girl's weekend. Two people had a terrible time with flights and never arrived ( American Airlines, UGH), but one friend made it, and we had a lovely time! In other news, I'm now obsessed with Vermont.
I got my keys for my new office in East Hall at BGSU! My new professional home away from home, I can't wait to fill it with books!
Fidil fell asleep ON MY HAND while I was petting him and watching Task Master. Oh what a sweet and silly furry boy.
Still open for subs for fiction, nonfiction, poetry. Fiction will probably hit its cap within the next 48-72 hours, so get it in soon. barrelhouse.submittable.com

My contributor's copy for The Mid-American review has arrived. I submitted long before I knew I would someday work at BGSU, and I'm so I'm extra excited for my meta-fictional story about Christina Rossetti to within. And to share space with @gwenekirby.bsky.social! @midamericanreview.bsky.social.
Its always fun being trapped into explaining to a random customer service person how AI works, that you can't copyright anything created with AI, and that "writing" with AI makes you a writer as much as microwaving a hot pocket makes you a chef.
My TA Fidil & I recommend The West Façade by Lauren Johnson from the @sfwp.bsky.social. This historical fantasy set in medieval Paris swept me away. The statues on the west façade of Notre Dame come alive, but only one, the statue of Saint Genevieve steps down & becomes human. #purrfectreads

I've finished my first graduate workshop syllabus!! One syllabus down, and one more to go for next semester. The luxury of only teaching 2 classes is unbelievable. I've made 5 syllabi each semester for most of the last 9 years. I'll get to focus so much more on my students now.
I had an amazing first research trip for my fantasy retelling of Little Women. I visited the archives in the Houghton Library, Walden Pond (so peaceful I didn't want to leave), Alcott's house, and more!
The world really has a case of the bat-shits. I'd like to recommend serious modifications to this timeline.
When radioactivity was discovered, there was a rush to market for all sorts of radioactive consumer goods. There were water jugs made out of uranium glass, for example. I think about that a lot these days whenever I see AI products being marketed to consumers.
I'm thrilled to announce that I'll be joining the English department of Bowling Green State University (Ohio) as an Associate Professor in their BFA and MFA in creative writing. I'll miss my ONU students and colleagues, but I'm SO excited for this new adventure!
Dr. Pullen & her TA Fidil recommend Immersions by Kyle McCarthy from @tinhouse.bsky.social. Two sisters, both dancers with one dangerous obsession. A coming of age novel, a thriller, and stealth Bluebeard retelling, this book kept surprising us! #purrfectreads
