West coast trips are hard and 3-3 is fine even if the teams are bad (and the Giants and Angels are really quite bad). But that wasn't exactly an inspiring week of baseball for the Milwaukee Brewers, and that's not even getting into the trade-deadline stuff.

I just keep coming back to one question: If being 2 1/2 games out of a playoff berth with 51 games left is a selling position, what is the value of that playoff berth? Why are we letting 40% of the teams into the playoffs, deeply undermining the regular season, if this is how teams act?

Even if all three prospects become stars AND Skubal signs with the Mets or whatever AND the Dodgers don’t win the World Series there wouldn’t be much regret. Like they traded Yordan away a few years ago and now it’s just like “oops remember when we did that stupid thing?”

Current status: Comparing prospect packages isn't worth it. That's fair value for a rental. Impossible to know what Tigers valued (maybe they suck! Maybe they know things we don't!), impossible to know if teams like MKE got the chance to up ante. Or would have.

Yay the Brewers have the best record in baseball, a truly feel-good night for the little guy in Major League Baseball.

So sick of them.

Something gnawing at me -- with Ohtani's health a question mark, it feels like the Dodgers really *need* Skubal. I don't think the Brewers should trade for him, but I also think the Dodgers will seriously pick up ground on the Brewers if they do.

Ope forgot a big one, Jordan Lyles in 2019 (1.9 WAR). It's between him and Ray Durham (0.8 WAR in 2008) for the two best deadline acquisitions that we don't talk about. And Claudio Vargas, I guess?

All trades, of course, could be precursors to other moves, whether intentionally or not. But you'll never get me to buy the idea that a trade announced in its entirety only happened because another one is already in the works. There might be intent or expectation, but nothing concrete.
