I’m so sad to see the latest report on Children of Blood and Bone and Tomi Adeyemi’s negative experience with the adaptation. I’m assuming she is under an NDA since she’s not providing details. So far, I’m still planning to go and support the work, but I will be looking out for more information:

So Andy Serkis defends an all white cast for the new LOTR film and Tomi Adeyemi wants nothing to do with Children of Blood and Bone, so looks like I’ll be at home reading instead of out at the movies 😢

In the last few months, I’ve been asked to write about NK Jemisin multiple times (currently writing a chapter). I don’t know when people started thinking of me as an expert on Jemisin‘s writing, but it feels weird. I console myself with the idea that Jemisin herself would think it’s equally weird 😅
I’ll be traveling soon, but before I leave, I have to celebrate one more fantastic debut that I don’t think is getting enough attention. The Killing Spell by @shaykauwe.bsky.social is a Hawaiian based fantasy with elements of mystery and romance. Loved the setting and cultural aspects!
Today, I appreciate Weavingshaw by Heba Al-Wasity! The setting/main premise of this book are incredible, though I am not fond of the "young woman in service to an 'evil' man finds herself attracted" trope. Read this for the writing and original ideas. www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/778530...

Today, I am finishing the last few pages of the incredibly charming debut City of Others by Jared Poon. Humor, found family, queer relationships, undead ducks, a ghost cat, and endless bureaucracy-- a lot to love!
Today, let's celebrate @domrabrun.bsky.social's Vèvè-Punk: An incredible debut story collection that highlights connections between the real and speculative in Haitian culture. Reading these stories was like listening to great oral storytelling--not an easy feat! www.strandbooks.com/veve-punk-il...

I doubt anyone will be surprised that my first pick for amazing debut novel goes to @dragons.bsky.social's The Poet Empress. This novel is as beautiful as it is creul. NOT romantasy! If you want to be on the edge of your seat for 400 pages, this book is for you! us.macmillan.com/books/978125...

I am amazed at how many strong debut novels are coming out this year! I know authors have often written many novels before one is accepted for publication, but to knock it out of the park on the first publication is quite the accomplishment! I will spend some time this week celebrating my favorites.

I got my hands on an ARC of @jvawrites.bsky.social’s The Demon Star and it is a crazy good debut SFF novel that everyone needs to read and share when it comes out in July!
@nghivo.bsky.social does it again! I need to get back to work on my teaching companion, but how am I going to choose only four of the seven amazing books in this series!
The fabulous Sistah SciFi bookstore just posted about Octavia Butler on FB and the first AI generated question underneath the post was “Why is Octavia Butler’s work still in print?” And I’ve never wanted to punch AI more than I do right now 😡. Anyway, here’s a picture of my favorite Butler novel.
I’ve read a couple of reviews so far of my new book Dispelling Fantasies, and I want to talk to younger scholars about these reviews. In any good review, the reviewer is going to tell readers something the author could have done differently and it’s true…
Huge thank you to @aylinwalder.bsky.social for a thorough and thoughtful review of Dispelling Fantasies that will reach a new audience of readers! The review is in German, but I was able to use the translation option on my phone to read it.

Amazing quote from @halalltakeaway.bsky.social's new novel Aicha: "...people who have only ever believed that they are superior merely by existing, that they are owed things they did not earn and can take what they want, they will never admit defeat." Don't miss this read!

Just returned from @iafa.bsky.social's annual conference, ICFA. Such a great conference! For anyone who missed because of the location, the IAFA board heard your concerns and year 2028 is going to be in Warsaw, Poland! Also, I will post the CFP for VICFA, our virtual conference, when it is ready.
