This plaque is next to my place. It commemorates a priest who in 1830 founded one of the first schools for deaf mutes in Italy "cui donava col canto la vita della parola" (to whom he gave with song the life of the word." I'm not sure what that means, but it's a lovely phrase. @jsfarr.bsky.social

Pour one out tonight not only for the thousands of fantastic scholars whose NEH grants were wrongly terminated, but also for all of the junior scholars who have never—and now may never in their lifetimes—receive federal support for their research
