Great thread. And a source of optimism for the EU's capacity to act: Even when it fails on its preferred means, it can still deliver big on the ends, by finally creatively and confidently using the "coalition of the willing" blueprints enshrined in its treaties. That's a way forward. 🇪🇺
So what the hell just happened? Two things: Ukraine will get 90 billion euros. And Orbán did not veto that even though he could have. How so? Short thread:
I'm all for uncomfortable means (reasonable amount of flattery) if that's what it takes to achieve the ends (keep the US in), but this is simply excessive and embarrassing. There's a balance to it - if you overdo it, you just signal subjugation and lose respect for the institution you represent.
I really don’t like being in a world where this is accepted but oh well
Frage an die Militärexperten: Was versteht man unter einer "defensiven Ausstattung der Streitkräfte"? 😵💫

@dmytrokuleba.bsky.social this week in Paris: "Not the restoration of the SU is Putin's goal but to destroy the west. The first major battlefield is in 🇺🇦, and he will come after you as well. The biggest mistake a human being can make is to believe it cannot hit you. I'm afraid it will."
“It’s madness. How stupid could we be to even think about that as an option?” ⚡️EU officials debate restart of Russian pipeline gas as part of a possible Ukraine peace deal. “We need to win and we need to survive”, emphasized our guest Olha Stefanishyna, Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine, at our special Morning Briefing today. In a panel discussion with her, @guntramwolff.bsky.social, @bctallis.bsky.social & @pociumban.bsky.social, we assessed the 🇪🇺 Ukraine strategy.
🇩🇪 policy on #Ukraine needs to reflect this lesson - & this support 🇺🇦 to win. “ those who take “never again” as referring to war rather than genocidal, expansionist dictatorship ignore the fact that in #Germany’s case the former was necessary to stop the latter.” ip-quarterly.com/en/whos-afra...

It just takes 30 sec to sign and confirm via email - but helps get the @Bundestag to discuss how to save Ukrainian kids from Russian deportation. #BringKidsBackUA #nafo
Russia is deporting Ukrainian children from their home to "Russify" them. This is genocide. We still need about 6000 signatures to reach 50 000 - the quorum needed for the German Bundestag to discuss the petition. The organizers are in contact with the Bundestag to this end. Please sign & share!

Sadly, this still applies. - it really beggars belief that #Germany’s chancellor still doesn’t see why Ukraine’s victory (& properly arming it to achieve that) is firmly in Germany’s interest - as well as being the right thing to do. We lay out why here ip-quarterly.com/en/whos-afra...
