Ok, problem two here, identify by McElreath is that correlations for assessing predictions is just kind of insane(?), no idea how that made it to print or even past the design phase. There's a pretty rich literature on evaluating predictions of models... bsky.app/profile/rmce...

The quoted paper does find that by RMSE, the predictions are bad. That's not the title though. And all the figures use correlation. There's just no context in which assessing predictions by correlation makes sense.

Real full-circle moment loading- First semester of college I took "Introduction to the mind-brain: psychological, biological, & philosophical perspectives" & fell in love w cognitive psychology. I vividly remember learning about PDP connectionist models & thinking that they were so freaking cool 1/

Our lab is currently at #teap2026 in Tübingen, Germany (say hi if you are there!). Yesterday I had a full day of excellent vision, illusion and psychophysics talks (including some magic ✨). Let's see what today brings.

Only two days left to submit your abstract for this year's @mathpsych.org meeting. Some things to consider: 1. The conference is in Canada. 2. If you cannot attend in person, there is a virtual track. Consider submitting there! You can pick the track during the submission process. See you there!

I have been a part of five psychology/public health departments over the years. I wish I could go back in time and tell myself — when I was really struggling and unhappy and felt like I didn’t belong in the field at all — how different your social experience can be from institution to institution.
