While I might be in the minority for not experiencing a renewed interest in the Odyssey this summer, I do love that my mutuals seem to be holding both an enjoyment for the movie and the scathing critique at the same time.

That's not incidental. Under-resourced districts are easier sells for "innovative" tech and harder places to say no when a company frames it as closing an opportunity gap. Rural and Indigenous communities keep getting cast as the beta testers for whatever Silicon Valley wants to normalize next. 4/

1. A short thread on the Trump / Kratsios "Golden Age of Science" report, the claim that scientific research has become less disruptive over time, and a paper about NIH's inadequate funding of novel science written by none other than the current director of the NIH, Jay Bhattacharya.

Can we take bets on which folks from #metascience go from marching to stand up for science a couple years ago to diving headfirst into this pool of money for their vanity projects and grievance fueled war on perceived qrps?

Ahead of a hearing before the House Science, Space and Technology Committee tomorrow, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy has released a 120-pg report, "Science: A New Golden Age" www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/u... Here's the summary from the press release:

The report organizes its recommendations to government, industry, academia, and philanthropy around four key pillars:

1. Revitalize America’s Science and Technology Enterprise
The R&D enterprise should refocus support on individual scientists rather than legacy institutions, diversify funding mechanisms beyond slow consensus peer review, create agile new research organizations such as X-Labs and expanded ARPA-like entities, and establish metascience units to institutionalize continuous improvement.

2. Secure U.S. Dominance in Critical and Emerging Technologies
Federal R&D should prioritize national mission-driven scientific initiatives that unite government, industry, academia, and philanthropy around ambitious goals. These include the Genesis Mission to double the productivity of American research through AI; the Quantum Computer for Application Development and Discovery Science (QC-ADDS); commercial fusion power demonstration by the mid-2030s; crewed lunar return and lunar base development; and next-generation semiconductor technologies.

3. Launch a New Golden Age Powered by AI for Science
The Federal government should fully fund and scale the Genesis Mission as the flagship national AI-for-science initiative to dramatically accelerate discovery; develop domain-specific scientific foundation models and high-value datasets, invest in AI-enabled verification infrastructure and autonomous laboratories; and begin transitioning toward AI-native scientific institutions better suited to an era of machine-augmented research.

4. Ensure That Science and Technology Better the Lives of All Americans
Federal agencies should integrate hands-on technical training and apprenticeships into STEM education, open scientific careers to skilled craftspeople and practitioners, build dense regional innovation clusters that link research with advanced manufacturing, and ensure that the economic returns of discovery reach every region and community in the country.

This looks useful. A typical meta-analysis in ecology mixes experiments with observational studies, mixes coefficients with different controls and therefore different causal meanings. I would not normally say "hey the folks in medicine are doing it right, imitate them" but in this case maybe

Because the point of this seems to have been missed by the email to *all* of the authors cc'ing my personal email address... The deeper issue here isn't whether the 245th author on a paper did an internship at Meta; it's the question of whether they're actually authors or participants.

Curious about the competing interests statesments for @i4replication.bsky.social’s @pnas.org paper. 1) funding for i4r comes heavily from an AI/tech tied group and 2) that many authors and none has a conflict of interest with LLMs and science? www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

This is one of those papers that winds up in a prominent journal and managed to bob and weave past reviewers with statistical training. Starting with the simplest possible thing: 469 effects from 70 experiments but AFAICT, there's no explicit handling of that hierarchical structure.
