Just watched the latest Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to celebrate a writing milestone. Wow. That was unpleasant. I don't want to become one of those boorish Trek fans who never shut up about how much they hate new Trek, I want to like it, but SNW has worn very thin.

The latest Trek canned before the next season even airs. Dr Who's Disney deal falls apart. The next Star Wars film is cobbled together from a season of television. Pop culture is at an inflection point, unsure where to go. I'm supporting more indie stuff. Things are better when creators own the IP.
Wasn't sure I'd like Starfleet Academy, but you know what? That was the best first season of live action Trek since DS9. Weirdly reminds me of the energy of the Spider-Verse movies in that it takes a classic franchise and revitalizes it with youthful joy.
Please support my brother's project so I can read the next issue. This is not an ulterior motive, I am being very clear about it.

Money has been very tight, so I held off on Starfleet Academy until I could watch it all in a month. I'm a couple of episodes in, and it's a lot of fun! I loved the Academy books/comics/games as a kid, so this feels weirdly like coming home.

Bookish on HBO Max is really top notch. Very cleverly written, great production values, excellent performances, stylish direction and a score that zings.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds isn't for everyone, and I respect that. But it is such a welcome respite from difficult real-life stuff. A show to watch with a nice cup of cocoa and a bowl of cereal.
