Emergent patterns of island biodiversity in the Anthropocene

Human impacts substantially affect our ability to detect and understand natural biodiversity patterns.

(Theme 5) State-and-transition diagrams can express what we think about possible future ecosystem dynamics in a form useful for public debate and for focusing on the most important uncertainties. (And there are lots of uncertainties.)

(Theme 4) Some ecosystems are strongly influenced by particular invasive species, so if gene technologies can be developed to suppress them, that can open up new options.

(Theme 3) If livestock grazing comes to be replaced by cell culture milk and meat, there will be new land use opportunities over wide areas.

(Theme 2) Present-day temperature envelopes may be completely displaced from present-day distributions for many foundation species. Mechanisms setting species boundaries are not well understood, and it remains unclear whether to migrate species geographically, and which species.

(Theme 1) More frequent extreme fire weather likely to produce shorter intervals between hot fires, making some veg types that need long intervals hard to sustain.

How can we predict ecosystems that don't exist yet? Our new paper led by @westobymark.bsky.social in @ausjbotany.bsky.social uses state-and-transition models to explore how ecosystems could change by 2100 under warming, rising CO₂, altered fire regimes, reduced livestock and new gene technologies.
