What's wild about short stories is how long they can remain ingrained in your psyche -- I completely remember reading this as a teenager, alongside All Summer in a Day, which STILL scars me. Bradbury knew how to gut-punch, and wasted no time in doing so

Today, August 4, 2026, is the setting of Ray Bradbury’s short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” about a fully automated house continuing on after the family who lived there and the world around it died in a nuclear blast.

Had a 75 minute drive in a car with only terrestrial radio to flip through in Northern Wisconsin on Saturday and heard "Jessie's Girl" three times and "Summer of '69" twice

TIL that Susan Ann Sulley & Joanne Catherall of Human League were high schoolers dancing in a club when lead singer Philip Oakey approached them to become backup singers even though they had no experience because he loved their style & look, so in other words the perfect 80's synth-pop origin story

Went to launder a new shirt and the tag just had a QR code which I presume directs you to the laundry instructions but I'd rather just ruin the shirt than reward whoever decided that was okay

It is somewhat ironic that reporters like Woodward and Bernstein becoming famous for doing journalism probably contributed to our current useless media environment by creating a generation of people who saw it as a path to fame and fortune while conveniently forgetting the doing-journalism part

I understand it from an ethical/bad precedent perspective but from a purely tactical one can someone explain why it's better for Beshear to confirm McConnell's demise and force a special election likely to go GOP versus leaving the Senate with one less Repub vote until after the general?

This weekend such a good reminder that people like shared cultural experiences. We don't want personalized AI prompt slop movies with Marilyn Monroe in Overwatch or whatever, we want stories guided by a steady hand or exciting sporting events we can enjoy together and talk about afterwards

People are fairly calling out Beshear for not pushing harder to get an answer here, but also, didn't we used to have a media that liked getting scoops? There's no reporter out there willing to throw on some scrubs Fletch-style and go check?

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) got two phone calls from different agencies suggesting that Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) had died, the New Republic relayed. This week, Beshear spoke with veteran newswoman Katie Couric, (cont.) www.msn.com/en-ca/news/o...?

I'm in Northern Wisconsin where the AQI has been between 250-600 for days and people are still out waterskiing on the lake and golfing. But hey, at least there are still air purifiers in stock everywhere, as opposed to LA when this happens

Matt Lombardo@mattlombardo.bsky.social · 3w ago

“It really doesn’t seem that bad here,” regarding the wildfire smoke, when a quick google search shows the current AQI is in the 200s and “unhealthy,” really illustrates the divide in this country and how many folks outright deny science, doesn’t it?

If the podcast dudebros get us Platners and the juiceless Schumer old guard gets us Mills-es, I’m all-in on the Mamdani/AOC wing we’re supposed to be so afraid of, thanks

The answer to combatting the Far Right has ALWAYS been to take over the Dem party with strong progressive fighters vs running doomed third party campaigns. Taking over the party worked for the Fascists in the GOP and it can work for liberals too, which is why the centrist Dems hate it so much

Downsides of Giannis trade: 1) Team acquiring lots of assets almost always loses vs team getting superstar 2) Great, several middling draft picks for a GM who has routinely sucked at drafting 3) Jimmy Haslem rancid vibes now dominant Upsides: 1) I can get a Bucks jersey with WARE on it 2) It's over
