I think the fundamental defect with going with boots for this metaphor is that, unless we assume completely different labor strata than currently exists for (post-)industrial society - namely that poor/laborers wouldn't put significantly more wear on boots than rich/capitalists.

Some people have suggested I haven’t done the background reading, but it’s not a deep idea. It’s from a passage that’s four sentences long.

When you make anti-immigration policy cruel and dehumanizing enough, in future years it won't matter that we've gone back to welcoming immigrants. The memory of what we did will be there, and so will the risk that we may do it again.
