Not sure whether you should submit/register for CBSM 2026 ... aside from our stellar guest speakers, exceptional student presentations and fantastic traders, our catering all included in your registration fee and arranged by the UWA UniClub is reason enough! Submit and register here cbsmwa.au

Our Frontiers in Genetics breakout session and speakers are locked in for CBSM 2026! Take a look at our keynote and invited speakers who will be discussing topics including bacterial genetics, gene editing, epigenetics and DNA scaffolding and origami.
🧬 CBSM WA 2026 — early bird rego & abstract submission now open! Breakout sessions spanning plant science, microbiology, cell & dev bio, genetics & biodiversity, plus a great plenary line-up and a networking sundowner to close. WA life scientists, come along 👇 cbsmwa.au
#nanoporeconf come and check out my cat at poster #31, and while there help me figure out what I found in my sequencing data
Virologists at #nanoporeconf come visit me at poster #31 later and help me figure out what we found in our fungal plant pathogens 😊
Off to Oxford today to visit @elithynne.bsky.social and talk some more about my circular DNA element 🧬
Check out the @theccdm.bsky.social spotlight article on our recent @plantdisease publication on the impact of fungal co-infection in breaking down disease resistance in wheat!
🦠 When wheat diseases collide CCDM scientists reveal how yellow leaf spot × SNB coinfection can shape disease severity and impact yields 🌾 Read more: buff.ly/HiVHnvA @curtinuniversity.bsky.social, #GRDC
We're hard at work to bring you another excellent #CBSMWA in 2026.
Throwback Thursday! Still inspired by the passion and high calibre of our student poster presenters seen at CBSM 2025.
I just recalled some older Nanopore data and started fixing the assembly when I came across a 'weird' contig. Blasting it generated a lot of almost perfect hits to 'plasmids' all across the tree of life. Turns out it was the spike in control DNA that comes with the ONT library prep kit...
Found another instance of my plasmid/virus, this time in sequencing data of Leptographium pseudotsugae, a fungal pathogen isolated from Oregon pine (Douglas fir). We're up to 11 fungal species carrying it. Still no clue what it is 🤷♂️
Had a lot of fun presenting our accidental finding of a circular DNA element in isolates of at least 10 different plant pathogenic fungal species at #strompath2025
Registrations for the Stromlo Plant Pathogen Conference #StromPath25 are rolling in fast and the program is now full! Exciting lineup from Japan, Korea, USA, UK, NZ + strong local crew. Join us in Canberra — rego open until Nov 13. Program available here tinyurl.com/3e3tx9j2

@tobybarilbio.bsky.social and I are very excited to release MycoMobilome! A very extensive effort to discover, QC and annotate TEs across the fungal kingdom. 👉 Ready-to-use for your own genome with a simple tutorial! 👉 Metadata about TEs discovered in your genome! 👉 Contribute and get recognition!
1/ Ever needed to annotate TEs in a fungal genome, but didn't know where to start? We have released #MycoMobilome, a community-focused non-redundant database of transposable element consensus sequences for the fungal kingdom, constructed from >4,000 fungal genomes! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
@mcdonaldmeganc.bsky.social Meagon! I hear congratulations are in order! All the best 😊
Incredible session from Professor Peter Solomon. Engaging and highly relevant to Australia’s wheat and plant pathogen landscape. #CBSMWA #CBSMWA2025
Dr. @jamespblloyd.bsky.social and @theccdm.bsky.social Dr. Liz Czislowski wrapping up the Biodiversity session at @cbsmwa.bsky.social with synthetic gene circuits for plants in space and novel nucleic acid based nanoparticle fungicides
Having fun at @cbsmwa.bsky.social presenting work on "The Entity", a circular genetic element we keep finding in unrelated fungal plant pathogens. #cbsmwa @theccdm.bsky.social
Come see Peter at #CBSMWA on Friday and at @theccdm.bsky.social on Thursday :-)
Excited to be Plenary Speaker at the Combined Biological Sciences Meeting in Western Australia on Sept 19 at UWA! I’ll share a novel plant immunity pathway + a few career reflections. Can’t wait to reconnect with WA friends + hear top biology from the west! cbsmwa.au @cbsmwa.bsky.social #CBSM2025
