No new game content to share for #screenshotsaturday, but here is my level editor for chesteratthepark.com. It’s part of the web prototype, which I still use for testing new rules and puzzle playtesting. It’s quite janky, but it runs on my phone which is really convenient! #indie #gamedev #pixelart
Most complexity in my projects is self-inflicted lol. In Chester there is no sprite sorting—most things aren’t separate sprites. This screenshot the tree, ice cream cart, bushes are all one background image. I wanted to minimize tile and asset reuse and hand draw as much of the park as I could.
Indie game devs, what is something your game does that is way harder than people think? For me, it's that my card game is stack based. Most people don't realize that instant speed interaction in a card game makes everything 1000x more complicated and difficult. This is exactly why nobody copies MTG
I use Pixquare for my sprite work, and besides being good software, the developer is really friendly! I made several feature requests on their discord, and they always reply with “I’ll see if that is possible” and then a few days later it’s just there
#gamedev is hard, but nobody told me how much work all the other stuff is? Setting up the steam page took _so long_. Made like 100 capsule art versions, and I speedran learning video editing Anyway, here’s a gameplay trailer I cut last weekend for #screenshotsaturday. Music is by my lil bro 💛
The Steam store page for Chester is finally up! Chester at the Park is a #puzzle game with #chess pieces and cute dogs in charming 1-bit pixel art! You should probably wishlist it! store.steampowered.com/app/4074100/... #indie #gamedev #pixelart

Chester at the Park on Steam
Pick up the chess pieces to lead Chester the dog through challenging puzzles. Explore the charming Checkered Meadows, meet other visitors and befriend the cute critters that live in the park.

I spent all week fixing bugs and now there's NEW bugs? That's not fair 😭 This one is probably the funniest. Sometimes when you reset a puzzle it just.. deletes _everything_, and now you got to watch out for demogorgons? #gamedev
Excellent advice on making a trailer, came at the perfect time 👀
Surprise! New video about basic story structure for game trailers, common mistakes to avoid, and some examples of trailers with great storytelling. This one stems from months of working on a day long masterclass I gave recently in France 👀 Shares much appreciated 😊
a compilation of my favorite gifs from the game i'm working on #gamedev #indiegame #screenshotsaturday
Look, I've been a bit busy ok. I know I haven't posted in like 2 years, but I'm still working on Chester, I promise! At least there is a lot of progress to share, like this brand new screen transition. I'll do my best to post more soon 🐕♟️ #gamedev #pixelart #chess #puzzle #indiegame
Our June meet-up is in 10 days! We'll also be getting a presentation this month from @kaesve.bsky.social titled "Pun Driven Development: A Side Project Philosophy"! This one will be a bit more developer friendly, though still for everyone. Come through and catch up! lu.ma/d9ls6y2m?tk=...
June 3&3 (featuring Ken Voskuil) · Zoom · Luma
What to expect: Come join us for our monthly virtual meetup and meet other people in the design and engineering industry! Meetups typically last about an hour,…

A friend of mine (@kaesve.bsky.social) is building an offline read.cv profile editor for the people who backed them up and want to continue being able to edit them. If you're into that can you like/reply on this to do a quick interest check? (DMs also open if you want to share your backup for tests)
Taking a break from Chester at the Park to work on smaller projects and new tech Do you remember that pipe-connecting game? Ever wish that game was also Tetris? Infiniplumber is a game about laying pipe 💦 Building in Zig for #playdate, coming soon™️ #screenshotsaturday #1bit #pixelart #gamedev
It’s been a while since I’ve posted, but I’m still working on chesteratthepark.com! Today I finished a completely new renderer that works with #1bit sprites directly and supports depth maps. Chester can now go behind the gate and other background features! #gamedev #pixelart #playdate
I’d post a gif for #screenshotsaturday if I could 😔 You’ll have to make due with a single frame of Orion’s fly-in animation for now #gamedev #pixelart #1bit #playdate
Been too long since I posted a #screenshotsaturday! I made a lot of progress, including this redesign of the first challenge area. Decided to go all in on the Japanese theme and renamed the haiku-croaking frog Kigo 🐸 More Chester updates coming next week! #gamedev #pixelart #indiedev #playdate
Tried to draw a #pixelart portrait of old man Bertrand, and while I think it turned out okay, he doesn’t really look like how I imagined him… I’ll probably try again but I thought I’d still try this version
I’ve been struggling with this tree, but it’s finally getting somewhere I think! For weeks I kept coming back to it, trying to render the foliage in a different way. Finally got a direction I liked while watching the new bridgerton season, and from there it just took two episodes to balance shapes
Late #screenshotsaturday because I am having a bit of a day, but this week has actually been quite productive! I got the rabbit in and the gate working, and updated the map with new decorations and layout. Getting closer to the next demo! #gamedev #indiegame
I promise I’ll post a real #screenshotsaturday again one day.. But here are two more pixel art portraits. The bunny hops around and gives you some tips on how to play, while the crow blocks your path until you give him shiny things. #gameart #gamedev
I’ve been thinking of starting a blog under the name ‘Commit Code Crimes’ to share some ‘bad’ code of my own, and what I learned from it. Would anyone read that?
Never let being bad at coding dissuade you from making a video game #gamedev
Alas, no new #screenshotsaturday, but here’s a poem: Through dark clouds A single streak of light Bishop strikes — Kodok, the Frog He might seem like a grump, but Kodok knows a lot about chess puzzles. If you impress him he may share some of his wisdom—or just more of his poetry 😉
It’s been too long since I shared a #screenshotsaturday! I’ve been working hard on the opening act and all the support systems I needed—dialogue trees, state machines, triggers, npc simulation, … but these screenshots are now actually in-game, instead of just mock ups. A big step! 🎉
Don’t normally make milestone posts like this, but this is my 0x100th post, perfectly balanced with my 0x100 followers 🎉
