Newsnight has just shown the Manchester (city) result and thought it was doing the full Manchester (Combined authority) result. The giveaway is Bev Craig got way over 50% of the vote and they did a second preference count. Total chaos. @luketryl.bsky.social asked to comment on just 92,000 votes

reminds me of a discussion with a naive group of young social democrats from sister parties around Europe 25 years ago. ‘Turnout in the European elections is low. We need to get people to pay attention: we should give the EU powers to set member state tax and benefits levels that would sort it!’

25% turnout for the Greater Manchester Mayoral Election. Nearly 3/4 of voters didn't show up for a contest, whose previous winner has just become prime minister. We shouldn't be blase about this: it raises big questions about the health of our democracy & the public appetite for the mayoral model.

At 16 my mum with her English pen friend met a guy. He was an autograph collector. Bearing a weird resemblance to Paul McCartney (she did) and speaking passable English she used to pretend to be ‘Frankie’ McCartney his sister. This time it got out of control and he went away with her autograph.

Pedro Porro would be only the 11th of this very specific type of World Cup winner …what is it?

World Cup moments…. Carlos Alberto v Italy (1970) … hand of god…. Tardelli ‘82… Gazza’s tears..zidane head but… a teenage Pele winning in 58… all great. All memorable. But the World Cup will now forever been Wayne Rooney’s. ‘It was crap’

I don’t think it’s nothing that England have had their second best ever finish in the World Cup. It’s not much. But it’s not nothing. Also they did it in an extremely hilarious way
