Scientist @KNMI, weather and climate, views my own; posts in 🇳🇱&🇬🇧.

📢 New paper on the impacts of AMOC collapse on European hydroclimate. 🌊 We find an AMOC collapse would exacerbate drought conditions across Europe, linked to reduced precipitation. In combination with climate change droughts are expected to become more frequent and severe. doi.org/10.5194/hess...

Changing European hydroclimate under a collapsed AMOC in the Community Earth System Model

Abstract. The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is expected to weaken or even collapse under anthropogenic climate change. Given the importance of the AMOC in the present-day climate,...

🚨⚡️New paper! We use 1600 years of large ensemble climate & energy simulations to identify weather regimes causing co-occurring renewable energy droughts in Europe. Understanding these weather-energy links is key to designing a reliable future energy system. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Meteorological drivers of co-occurring renewable energy droughts in Europe

As Europe transitions to renewable energy sources, its electricity system becomes increasingly dependent on weather conditions. This reliance introduc…

It has been hard to follow the developments in US (climate) science- thinking of the people affected and the science missed out on. The latest cuts end the NOAA GFDL/PrincetonUni program I personally worked in. It was fundamental in my career, breaks my heart 💔🌎. www.commerce.gov/news/press-r...

Excited to have been part of this perspective, led by @timokelder.bsky.social, discussing how society can build resilience to, rather than be surprised by, unprecedented weather: 💪 vs 😱 Includes a review of methods to anticipate events, and discussion on adaptation practice and disaster management.

🌱☀️A new paper by Jonna van Mourik explores drivers of multi-year droughts around the world. She compares multi-year events to 'normal' droughts of shorter duration. Excited to see Dr Henrique Goulart defend his PhD on Monday. He explored methods to develop physical storylines connecting weather to societal impacts. Historic extremes in different settings, due to random climate variability or climate change, can be used to test adaptation strategies.

Very much recommend this #EGU25 session! Last year it was an afternoon full of cool science, new insights, and good discussions (plus a nice dinner afterwards). I personally won't be attending this year (for happy reasons, expecting baby#2), but am convinced it will be equally great.
