Researching children and young people’s wellbeing, and communicating all things @beewelluk.bsky.social @educationuom.bsky.social

On the long trek home from #BERA2025 & thought I'd share highlights from the week: 1. Presenting preliminary findings from my review about how the school teens go to & the neighbourhood they live in can influence mental health & wellbeing - bonus, I snuck in references to Harry Potter & Neighbours😊

Interesting piece in @schoolsweek.bsky.social on the role of the school environment in students mental health. Next week I'll be sharing preliminary findings from a review about this at #BERA2025 looking at what we know & where we need more evidence before making changes. tinyurl.com/5bmy48d8

Our education system is only making mental health worse

Recent government interventions are welcome, but we're only papering over the cracks without meaningful school reform

A great few days of training! Watch out for new presentations and videos from the @beewelluk.bsky.social team putting all these skills into practice 🎥 🎬 🎤 I'm also looking forward to using what I learnt at #BERA2025 @beranews.bsky.social and #EUSPR2025 in September!

It was great to work on this paper using @beewelluk.bsky.social data to look at how neighbourhood deprivation influences young people's mental health and wellbeing - full paper is here: www.mdpi.com/3362394 - and this is a great summary below 👇

Teens from disadvantaged areas face lower life satisfaction but not more emotional problems, new study finds. New research led by experts from @manchester.ac.uk’s @educationuom.bsky.social has shed important light on how the mental wellbeing of young people is affected by where they live. 🧵👇

"If we want to shift from firefighting crises to offering earlier, more effective support, we need better information to guide schools, inform local services & shape national policy." Great article in @schoolsweek.bsky.social on measuring young people's wellbeing: schoolsweek.co.uk/labour-must-...

How Labour can get to grips with the mental health crisis

With its schools bill, the government has a chance to finally get the proper measure of kids' wellbeing

Excited to share this paper on my Masters dissertation - it’s taken a while! Thanks to Alex Hennessey for all your support! We looked at how teacher student relationships can reduce adolescent distress by fostering mindfulness skills 👇 www.frontiersin.org/journals/edu... #education #mentalhealth

Great blog by @megancuttsphd.bsky.social and Mairi Jeffrey sharing some of their research highlighting why it's so important to listen to the voices of young people with SEND about school support and wellbeing 👇

#BeeWell @beewelluk.bsky.social · 2y ago

“The inclusion of young people with SEND’s voices is not just a matter of good practice – it is a fundamental right...” A new #BeeWell blog highlights the importance of involving young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in decision making.

Wow - what a January!! The #OurWellbeing campaign for a national youth wellbeing measurement programme has been making waves - with lots of good news so far this year. A busy and an exciting time! Here's what's been happening:🧵

In 2022, 197,000 young people left secondary school with low wellbeing—equivalent to six children in every class. The Children’s Wellbeing & Schools Bill is a welcome step, but measuring wellbeing nationally could provide the evidence we need to support them better.

PBE@pbe.co.uk · 2y ago

The Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill has the potential to make a significant difference in supporting our children’s wellbeing. To maximize its impact, universal wellbeing measurement would be a valuable addition. Read the new blog: www.probonoeconomics.com/the-82-billi...
