This report is crucially important. Our University serves a whole region, with a widening participation agenda. We will now be a cold spot for Humanities, as our University has removed the opportunity for local students from WP backgrounds to study well-established and employable subjects.
We know for SHAPE subjects what's lost to UK higher education by current HE policy. (No one seems to be minding the STEM shop by the way). Cold spots for SHAPE subjects now abound. The data are clear: this disproportionately affects disadvantaged students. 8/9 @helenhayes.bsky.social
Back to Bluesky to signal boost this as a UH grad. My heart goes out to everyone. Absolutely grim.
On Friday afternoon before the Bank Holiday, colleagues in the Humanities department were called to a meeting on Tuesday. They were informed that the University Portfolio Review had decided that English Language, English Literature, Philosophy, History & Creative Writing UG degrees would close

hello! I haven't posted in a while - been finding it hard to feel academic and cool when I'm now 1.5 years post-phd and feel like the only person I know not making any progress, stuck in a job I dislike, can't get myself to write, etc.

Real question, how does anyone have the energy to even put themselves on the academic job market or write publications after the PhD... It's been 1.5 years and I still can't get out of bed
Hadn't heard back from a job and turns out they waited until Leverhulme day to send out their rejections which is a choice
Now the handover is done etc. I can finally say that I am the new @bsecs.bsky.social Criticks editor! And the first article of my tenure is already up - a fab review of BBC's Miss Austen by @philistella.bsky.social: www.bsecs.org.uk/criticks-rev...
Miss Austen (BBC) - BSECS
To reduce Austen’s writing to a set of aesthetics and tropes, punctuated by the clanging thud of exposition, is surely its own kind of disservice.

Was kinda hopeful for 2025 but the chronic health issue I've been dealing with since May 2023 has officially been closed as a chronic pain condition (atypical odontalgia as a result of nerve damage) so not feeling that hopeful anymore tbh

I'm thrilled to announce that I did not get through any of my Leverhulme internal rounds and plan on channelling all that energy into finally finishing my article on Siddons, O'Neill and playbills... then starting another on playbills and attention 👁️🗨️

Well this sucks. Museum caves in in response to a hostile article in the local press written by a former Restore Trust director. If you’re gonna have these initiatives at your museum, you need to have some backbone too. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
