unless there is no other potable option, there's no good reason to buy water, for multiple very good reasons when I moved cities I though the other water tasted funny but now I don't notice it (it was just different mineral content)

During a recent ROV dive near Trinidad & Tobago, the #DeepWonders science team — led by @divaamon.bsky.social — collected spectacular footage of a black swallower fish (Chiasmodon sp.) at a depth of 1259 meters.
So, like, no salad at all? I figured the pre-washed stuff would be better somehow than my washing at home...? Sigh. If only we hadn't gutted key functions of our public health infrastructure.
Richard Waite@waiterich.bsky.social · 2w agoFWIW, FDA says: discard outer layers of produce, rinse produce throughly and scrub harder veg, be cautious with pre-washed or pre-cut produce (that’s the one I’m avoiding now), avoid cross-contamination, and prioritize cooking to at least 158 degrees F. Seems more reasonable?

One time Sergey Brin asked me a weird question about shark science! He was concerned about sharks by his favorite beach, and asked why we didn't create a network of drones to patrol the whole coastline. I pointed out that doing this would cost several times the entire annual NSF budget.

a reminder: the single most impactful action the world could take to help global fisheries to stop providing harmful subsidies to their fishing fleets some countries really dragged their feet even getting to this point (cough~India!~cough) and still lots left do do #stopfundingoverfishing

Less than two weeks ago, Thailand (13th, 2% of the catch) also ratified the agreement.
