It’s really hard to pick who will win today’s stage. Pogacar lost last year, so maybe he’ll want this today. I think Carapaz is exhausted after this last week, otherwise I’d give the “most aggressive” rider a second look 🇪🇨 💪

The football team won! 🇪🇸 The good guys defeated the latest avatar of anti-football or the “dark arts.” 🇦🇷 Not a single shot. Not one attempt. In, what was it, over 120 minutes of regulation time? That has to be a record. And rightly called “anti-football.”

Good teams have bad games. 💙🇫🇷 At least we lost to a team that was genuinely better than us today. There are worse ways to lose. I guess I’m rooting for Spain to take down whoever comes out alive tomorrow.

You know what I don’t need: a representation of the temperature as a difference between today and the average 1991-2020. It’s hotter. It’s always hotter. If it were, by some statistical anomaly, cooler, I probably wouldn’t be looking at the temperature.

Jury’s still out for Argentina. But as for Portugal, I was confident this would happen. When Renaldo went back to United, he was always running offside, sitting up the pitch, waiting for someone else to win back the ball and pass. He didn’t track back. He was selfish. It was like playing a man down

Argentina has a similar issue as Portugal: over-reliance on someone (a celebrity) who’s past their prime.

“Not letting heavily pregnant women on a plane is not a repeatable way of talent development, is it?” - The Athletic FC Podcast (7 Jul 2026) Hard truths about USMNT and Balogun. 😆 Hard, but fair

Why is there no football today? I’m finally being released from the grips of a stupid summer flu, and now I have to wait for France v. Morocco? I guess the only thing to do is binge watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, in honor of our French hero. 🦸🏿‍♂️

On the transmission of texts: Written cultures as complex systems

Abstract. Knowledge of past cultures relies heavily on surviving written material. Over the centuries, texts were copied, altered, and often lost, leaving

There’s been some quality football (soccer) at this World Cup. And football is rarely about national teams—virtually all of these guys have a “day job” that’s pretty cool: playing football together for clubs in diverse cities around the globe. The USMNT is out. But this is a fun sport. Enjoy it!

I love that we’re in the knockout stage and that the heat dome is gone. And it’s the weekend. This South Africa / Canada game is not of the greatest quality, but it’s still fun. And the whole time, you know something big is eventually going to happen. Davies? 🇨🇦

It’s still too early to replay the US match, so I’m enjoying Ecuador v. Germany. Love that a woman is ref’ing and the assistant ref is also a woman. Don’t love she allowed that first goal, but I’m gonna blame the VAR team. Not only was that a high boot, but it clearly caught Vite in the head. 🤕

It’s 5 AM. I’ve gotten up to open the windows for the day. Between now and 7 AM is the lowest temperature we’ll see, and it’s 29 degrees. Maybe it’ll drop further to 28. Is that the coolest we can bring our apartment down to? France is in trouble, and there’s still no plan.

The shot stopping from this Congolese keeper 🇨🇩 (Mpasi) is really something! But with Colombia’s aggressive and relentless attack, I don’t see how something doesn’t eventually break through. Exciting game!

I didn’t watch the England game, but from what I’ve read, this disallowed goal in the first 8 minutes of the Colombia 🇨🇴 DRC 🇨🇩 game was more exciting than England and Ghana’s first 45 minutes. Both these teams are really fun. I particularly love the hustle from Colombia, and attitude from both.

The French government defines a heatwave, not just by how hot it gets in the day, but by how low it drops at night. When 72 hours pass without any relief below 20 degrees to cool down residences, that’s considered dangerous. We might get down to 21 degrees Sunday morning around 6am. Until then, 🥵🫩
