It was a really bad air day for DC. A pollution double whammy. Not only did smoke pollution reach code purple (very unhealthy) levels this AM and hover at code red this PM, but ground-level ozone, another pollutant, spiked to code red this afternoon. This is not something we can remember seeing.

If your air is visibly poison, please consider wearing an n95 or better. The collapse of healthcare and rise of fascism is a real bad time to get sick or disabled. Please also consider donating to mask blocs in affected areas so more people can access protection. Give/get mask mutual aid:

A couple years ago, Casey Kasem's top 40 was being replayed on the radio and they were counting down 1976. Some disco song came on and in the middle of it was a catch little riff that I KNEW I'd heard before, but had never heard the song. It kept replaying in my brain for a couple of days...

Hold the phone…so women got COVID less or just had lower side effects if vaccinated in days 14-28 vs 1-14?? @chantzy.bsky.social
Very cool - a study led by @lshtm.bsky.social PhD student shows women vaccinated for COVID during follicular phase had 35% ⬆️ odds of reported side effects vs vaccinated in luteal phase Growing research suggests the menstrual cycle may influence immune responses to 💉 idp.nature.com/authorize?re...
This is really fucking idiotic considering that there are VERY FEW UNIVS in the US that even have marine science/oceanography depts. So, nobody from Scripps/UCSD can be a reviewer if another Scripps/UCSD person has a proposal in???? Just the dumbest fuckin ppl heading NSF rn.
New: NSF is tightening its conflict of interest rules in what could be a headache for the understaffed agency. Starting in August, reviewers will no longer be able to participate in a panel with any proposals from their own institution. My reporting for @science.org:
The HPV vaccine was approved 20 years ago this week. In a new series, CIDRAP News looks at what we've learned. In this story, we profile two sisters: Hailey was eligible for vaccination in 2006. Erica was not. 6 yrs later, Erica was diagnosed with cervical cancer. www.cidrap.umn.edu/human-papill...

How little we’ve seen: A visual coverage estimate of the deep seafloor
In decades of deep-sea exploration, humans have observed only 0.001% of the deep seafloor, leaving 66% of planet Earth unseen.
