the answer, like for so many people from my micro-generation, is the Challenger explosion. What's funny is that the next real historic event I remember isn't until the 1988 presidential election, followed very distinctly by Tiananmen Square in 1989 (coverage interrupted Saturday morning cartoons)

This should never have happened but now that the seal is broken there is absolutely no reason for our side not to actively retaliate by destroying the lives of ICE/CBP/Immigration Judges/Police writ large/Significant portions of the VC and Silicon Valley set/etc.
