Now: Making Decoder @ The Verge. Earlier: editor for Protocol; reporter for Ars Technica, CQ Roll Call, Consumerist, and Kotaku; decades of other writing strewn across the internet. Boston-born, now DC-dwelling. She/her.

Today is my first day of vacation so I'm still in "OMG I forgot to open Slack!!" mode. By the time I start work again in two weeks it'll be: "The Verge? I don't know her. What am I doing here? Who are all you people? Deecodder? What?"

The part of me that schedules first-thing-in-the-morning doctor appointments so I don't mess up my day never coordinates with the part of me that has to do the totally-different-from-school-hours summer camp dropoffs and pickups and, well, at least I finally got my morning coffee at 11:30 🙃

I recently joined a large French-language discord server and I am entirely lurking for now but a full discussion about competition and antitrust in videogames unfolded while I was asleep and it's like this was tailor made for me, personally, to learn from lolol

lol okay I know I procrastinate sometimes but discovering today that my mom still left her cell phone account in my dad's name, even though she outlived him by more than six years, was a surprise

Trying hard not to lean on elder kid too much, because she is still a kid, but my god it's really nice to be able to just sit down and rest my stupid foot and have someone else hand me a plate of breakfast. Proud of her.

We have had these cats for about three months now and it is still very funny to hear elder child lecture younger cat, "ALOY DESPITE-THE-NORA COX! STOP THAT!"

Silver linings of this whole broken foot situation: Thank god my kids are big enough to help out and to be left home without a grownup for a whole, and I am not trying to limp around toddlers. This would have been WAY harder to handle two years ago than it is now.

Love to end the weekend waiting 90 minutes at urgent care to find out if my foot is broken or sprained. Especially when I have major walking trips planned for the near future. 🙃

My problem with the first episode of Strange New Worlds is that none of the characters inside it have ever seen a Star Trek before and are 10-20 minutes behind understanding what is clear to the watcher. Alas

My mother's phone still works. As in, is connected to a cell network and has 5G service and all. She's been dead over a year and we've *never* seen a bill or had any communication at all from the carrier. So I guess tomorrow I'm going to go to a store and make *them* figure out what account it is.

@smadin.net A million years ago you were observing "welcome in" and wondering where it came from and I hadn't heard it anywhere. And then I have noticed in the last few months it is EVERYWHERE, in at least three states. It's GOT to be some new corporate training thing? You're right, it's bizarre.

Today marks five years since we moved into this house and I *absolutely* still have a huge pile of art and photos in the closet I'm going to get up on the walls "someday."

Eldercare is a far worse hole and a bigger mess than childcare. As more and more of the millennials age into Sandwich Generation it will become even more clear how dire the situation is. Obvs I'd prefer if my parents were still alive but at least I don't have to do THAT hot mess anymore.

Eldercare is hard work, severely underpaid that was already understaffed. Since Medicaid is "the primary payer" of this work, it's unlikely there will be a huge increase in wages to attract non-immigrant workers. Are Americans prepared to quit their jobs to take care of their elders? Many have.

Took me so, so much longer to put together "AQI reading is 357 at a building on the corner where I just had an appointment" and "I came home with a headache and my eyes itch" than it should have

Brought the air purifier from elder kid's room (she's away at camp anyway) up to our office this morning. It has THOUGHTS about the air quality in our office and the cats have THOUGHTS about its THOUGHTS, this will be a fun morning

Realized, now that elder child is off at sleep-away camp, that the collection of stuffed toys appearing in the living room from downstairs is not because of kids but because of the younger cat; this mighty hunter is dragging toys across the whole basement and up to the kitchen. Regularly.

One day, I will log into a platform or tool I use for my job and the buttons, functions, and overall UI will still be right where I left them the last time I logged in. One day. But not today.

The amount of "I can't focus" when someone else is also working from home and having meetings — I am astonished how many years of open newsrooms I ever managed to survive in my career lol
