Inside the mother of all Neolithic tombs ... Newgrange in Ireland. This photo, from excavator Michael O'Kelly's book, shows the chamber (with spiral carving) that is illuminated via the famous roofbox opening at winter solstice. A 5,200-yr-old celebration of the return of the sun. #TombTuesday

Věděli to?

The 9thC Saxon font at St Mary's, Deerhurst with its mesmerising pattern of swirls. The bowl was found abandoned in a farmyard in the mid 19thC, the base was found nearby and the two were subsequently reunited in the church. Such an important piece of art. #FontsOnFriday

This terracotta kantharos from the #MetMuseum is one of my favorites. The parade of horsemen is beautifully and confidently painted; all of the men ride bareback, of course (6th c. BCE - no saddles or stirrups). But seated with their legs up and forward seems unstable. 🤔 🏺 1/ 📸 me

This Boeotian kantharos (footed double-handled drinking cup) has a procession of black-figure horsemen in a band encircling the raw terracotta lip. Note how the men sit on the horses without the aid of stirrups or saddles - bareback, but with the aid of reins. Yet they sit over the shoulders of the horses, with their legs elevated and forward. As someone who's ridden horses, this seems unstable - any sudden movement or acceleration would cause them to fall over backwards. Purely an artistic convention?
