I honestly can’t stop thinking about this RFK speech. A lot of the outrage around it is focused on pointing out that it’s not true. But so fucking what if it was? Do people whose bodies don’t work not deserve to exist in society? If all these things were true for a person are they less worthy?

None of us can be sure what will “work.” You try multiple things and find your way in. Read some histories of the Civil Rights Movement by those who participated. They were never “sure” of what would work. Some campaigns fizzled out. But persistence, creativity, determination, and focus were key.

My statement regarding the decision to drop the second round of the CZI Science Diversity Leadership Award funding opportunity:

I am crushed that the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative has decided not to continue with the second round of the Science Diversity Leadership Awards. My heart breaks for all the scientists that submitted their grant applications with the hope that their research and community building ideas would be funded to help make the science world a more equitable place. I see you. Please take the time to mourn the loss of your time and effort and figure out your next move.

I feel an intense surge of survivors’ guilt. As part of the first (and now last) CZI SDL cohort, I have enjoyed significant personal and professional opportunities that have emerged after receiving the award – opportunities that have now vanished for future science diversity leaders. The award gave me confidence in my research program, but more importantly, was the catalyst I needed to bring my full self to the laboratory. After receiving the CZI award, I finally felt comfortable fully coming out to the scientific community and embracing my identity as a proud queer Latino scientist. The award was extremely unique and enabling, allowing me to build a vibrant laboratory community, support various professional development activities for trainees, and grow my research program focused on understanding sex differences in biology towards our goal of health equity. I am devastated that future scientists with stories like mine will not have the financial support they need to achieve their vision in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.

As a Science Diversity Leader, I remain fiercely committed to my personal and professional mission to promote diversity through impactful science and community building efforts. I will continue using this platform to uplift diverse voices in the scientific community. To those feeling hopeless, please know that our continued commitment and presence in science is a powerful form of social justice. Science funding is key to the future of America and the health of our community

I am a Biology professor at UNC and this semester I am teaching a course called Cancer Biology to a group of juniors and seniors. I began teaching this course 20 years ago and it’s been incredible to see and teach about the improvements in cancer treatment. Between 1991 and 2019, the cancer death rate decreased 32%. New treatments for breast cancer, colon cancer, and most recently melanoma have saved millions of lives—many of us know a cancer survivor. Similar advances occurred in treating heart disease, with drugs like statins changing outcomes. Even more exciting changes are starting to roll out: these include the first gene therapy treatments for sickle cell disease and Type 1 diabetes. It’s been exciting to be a small part of this—our lab helped define how signaling between cells goes wrong in colon cancer.
None of these new treatments arise in a vacuum. All rest on decades of basic and translational research, and follow-up clinical trials, most of which is funded by our tax dollars via the National Institutes of Health (NIH). North Carolina and especially the Triangle play an essential role in this, making science and technology key drivers of our state and regional economy. In 2023 NIH awarded $2.28 billion (yes, with a b) in grants to NC institutions, and this helped us create more than 25,000 jobs. Nationwide more than 400,000 jobs are supported by NIH grants, and this generates $92 billion in economic activity.
The National Science Foundation, which funds scientific research more broadly, has a similar impact, fueling, for example advances in solar energy or helping us understand the impact of climate change on the NC coast. NSF provided $220 million in grants to NC Institutions in 2023. In total, UNC received $800 million in federal research funding in 2023, Duke $860 million and NC State $416 million.
