Lovely feeling on an eight-mile run… You’ve been staring down at uneven ground, lost in your thoughts. You look up for a landmark that should be just ahead — and realise you’ve already left it behind.

Lacking protective glasses, I turned my back on last week’s partial eclipse. I watched light stream through a colander, making marks that did turn gradually from dots to crescents. Then I read again the marks that Annie Dillard made after witnessing a total eclipse in the Yakima Valley in Washington
