Kiwi on your left

@kiwionyourleft.bsky.social

Kirikiriroa Hamilton. East of the river, left of the centre. Environment. Treaty. Trans rights. Healthcare. Education. Tax wealth not work. All these things and more.

Record levels of un- and under-employment. Record levels of company liquidations. Record numbers of homeless. Record inequality. Why are left and right still about even in the polls? Have people just stopped believing their own experiences? Is it purely the media bias? #nzpol

And to anyone thinking "Wait up, what's the catch? There must be something dodgy going on, everyone says we can't afford this." well guess what, we can, and have always been able to, afford it, if only we make the people who collect multiple superyachts chip in a bit more. #nzpol

Oh goodie, an email from Genesis. What could it possibly say? "We're simplifying our plans to make managing your energy easier, and we wanted to let you know what this means for you." Ah. Another price rise. F' you john key. F' you national. Sold the whole country out for a few dollars. #nzpol

History warns us. In 1994, The Economist noted that NZ's free-market policies fueled soaring inequality. Today, the National, ACT, and NZ First coalition is running the same playbook. We cannot afford to repeat these failed economic experiments. #nzpol

Quick reminder that labour introduced a tax transparency bill that would report on how fair our tax system is anually and the first thing luxons govt did was repeal it so that nobody would get that information.

In 20 years time some kid is gonna install Windows 11 in a VM just to see what it was like, and they're gonna ask their techie dad "Hey dad, what's this copilot thing? It just throws an error about "backend service not available"." and he's gonna get that 1000 yard stare...

Good points from Willie Jackson about the damage done by Seymour with his corporate contracting of school lunches (copied from FB for those who hate that place)

What planet is David Seymour on?
The Auditor General has reviewed the mess he’s made of our school lunch programme and they have found that almost half the food is not nutritious and 20,000 meals are wasted every single day!

When we ran the programme, we made sure local businesses held the contracts to inspire local jobs, we made sure the food was nutritious and if there were issues, there was enough room to move the menu.

We know that for many of our whanau, that lunch represented the best meal a lot of our kids got.

Hungry children don’t learn, investing in something as simple as healthy food is a no brainer, yet what did Seymour do?

He slashed the budget and we ended up with food so bad that many don’t want it.

This is how the Political Right spoil and ruin good public services, they underfund them and make them so bad people don’t use them so the Right can then claim there is no demand.

There is only one thing you can do with someone like David, and that is vote him out of Government.

Make sure your whanau are enrolled now because this Government have changed the enrollment timeframe in order to rob you of your vote.

Our mokopuna deserve better than this.

The Coalition of Clowns is trying hard to disenfranchise people. Do not let them steal your right to vote. Register early, check your enrolment, talk to friends, family and colleagues, and let's send their hatred and punching down packing on November 7. #nzpol

News around seizure of Brian Tamaki's guns highlights limits of NZ's ability to address hate, even after March 2019's lessons. I've studied every speech, & every 'sermon' by him online going back to '21. He's NZ's leading proponent of dangerous speech, but always with plausible deniability. #nzpol

Dr Sanjana Hattotuwa@sanjanah.bsky.social · 2y ago

Academics see this as 'plausible deniability' - a technique used by many disinfo producers, & far-right in NZ (& beyond) to weaponise irony, humour, memes, & speech acts such that what's made out to be unserious is actually a dog whistle. Trump key exponent of this. www.wbur.org/cognoscenti/...

As a culture, we are fine-tuned to hearing innuendo. We like nuance, suggestion and hints. In stories, innuendo gives rise to intrigue and mystery. In politics, it gives its messengers the protections of ambiguity and plausible deniability. But innuendo is clear as day for people attuned to it, and that is where Donald Trump’s suggestion that Second Amendment supporters could “do something” about Hillary Clinton if she is elected joins a long line of thinly masked threats in American politics.

Hey @proton.me , if you don't want me to cancel your entire suite of products, STOP individually toggling on specific communications preferences just to send me an email. That's twice now that you've done that. I've turned them ALL off for a reason. I'm cancelling next time this happens. 😠

ACT couldn't have dismantled Kiwi workers' rights without the support of NZ First. ACT couldn't have sold us out to overseas mega-corporations without the support of NZ First. ACT couldn't have set back Kiwi women a decade without the support of NZ First. A vote for NZ First is a vote for ACT #nzpol

A version of the "spiderman" pointing meme - two identical spider-man characters are pointing at each other in recognition against a warehouse background, but their faces have been replaced by Winston Peters and David Seymour, implying their identicalness. Text reads: "A vote for NZ First is a vote for ACT.", alongside a small authorisation: Authorised by Dennis Maga, Workers First Union, 120 Church Street, Onehunga, Auckland; plus a Workers First Union logo.

Make no mistake, a vote for the current coalition will be interpreted by them as a mandate to do all these horrible things to our country. You cannot expect them to pitch this now, then roll it back if they get in again. Two ticks Green is the way to stop them. ✅✅ #nzpol
