I have this thing where I get older but just never wiser | Hachiman Defense Substack https://hachiman.substack.com/ | Formerly covered defense @ Popular Mechanics. Weapons person.

The Pentagon claims the Iran war cost $37.5 billion while independent analysts estimate over $100 billion. A democracy cannot hold its government accountable if the true cost of its wars is hidden, writes Cato's Benjamin Giltner. https://ow.ly/tB7w50ZwaqS

Secretary Hegseth’s $37.5 Billion Iran War Claim Doesn’t Add Up

Independent organizations and the public must continue to investigate and bring to light the actual costs of this war. Transparency in government, any semblance of it, is mandatory for a democratic government.

ehhhhh........ I mean the problem is that while I hate parts of this I don't in fact hate the outcome. We've known that we've needed icebreakers for more than two decades now and neither the Coast Guard nor the Navy were capable of doing anything about it.

President Trump decided to buy 11 polar icebreakers, worth almost $7 billion, after a game of golf with Finland’s president. The question, experts say, is how many the U.S. really needs. nyti.ms/4hK355K

Something I’ve missed: Japan’s suicide rate per capita has fallen by nearly half, from 29.3 in 2008 to 15.4 in 2025. In 2010 the US Marine Corps and Japan had roughly the same suicide rate, even though just one was at war. www.nippon.com/en/japan-dat...

Number of Suicides in Japan Falls Below 20,000

The total number of suicides in Japan decreased below 20,000 in 2025, reaching its lowest point since records began in 1978. However, the number of schoolchildren who took their lives remained high.

I see these small 47 foot boats in the surf all the time across the street from my house. These guys plunge into big waves for hours, I’m not surprised their brains are getting beaten up. Why the Coast Guard isn’t aware of the problem is baffling, but not surprising I guess.

The New York Times@nytimes.com · 6d ago

U.S. Coast Guard rescue crews can suffer brain injuries from the relentless pounding of waves. The service has never studied the hazard that waves may pose to the brain and knows little about the force of the hits or the consequences of years of exposure.

How the politics of raised a’s and disappearing g’s briefly came to dominate the Michigan Senate race.
