Not to be outdone, Tracking the Colour of Peatlands (#PeatColours) is now in its third year. We've had over 1000 photos so far this year. I love seeing people engage with peatlands, sharing their photos and helping us understand their dynamics through the dataset that is being produced!

Since launching 'Suivre la couleur des milieux humides au Québec' in May '26 we've already received 525 photos from citizen scientists across our first 9 sites! Not only is this a fun project to help understand seasonal change in wetlands, but it helps raise awareness of these important ecosystems!
Left the peatlands behind this week and got to work in this beautiful freshwater marsh! My new masters student Maya will be measuring GHG fluxes using our new stackable chambers as part of the CARBONIQUE project Lots of fieldwork this summer (which always bring a little stress) but a lot of fun!
Attention #ECR 📣 Two weeks left to apply for this season’s #PeatNeeds funding!💰 #peatlands #wetlands #studentlife #phdlife
📣 #PeatNeeds is back for July/August 2026! Microfunding of 125 CAD$ for one #ECR working on a wet-/peatland project. Global, no age limit. Apply by July 31; notifications by Aug 31. Previous #PEATNeeds awardees aren’t eligible. Apply ⤵️ docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F... #PeatNeeds #PeatECR #Peatlands
One month left to apply for the summer round it @peatlandecr.bsky.social 2026 #PeatNeeds micro grants. It's a really easy application process, so go check it out if you are in need of a small financial boost as summer fieldwork kicks off.

Birches drain the #bog? @carterarla.bsky.social shows in our recent paper that this might be a simplification as birches might rather be an indicator of disturbed hydrological conditions than its cause. 👉 doi.org/10.1002/eco.... @marenecohydro.bsky.social @bioclimatology.bsky.social
Excited to start expanding our peatland phenology work with our new toy = A ChromoMapper from PyrOptik (an affordable hyperspectral imaging system: 400 - 950nm) Can’t wait to take it for a spin out on our sites.

Happy World Peatlands Day ! Another opportunity to promote the #PeatColours project. It’s been such a brilliant way to engage with the public on the importance of these beautiful landscapes peatcolours.github.io/tracking.html #worldpeatlandsday
Proud to co-lead the CARCLIQUE Quebec Research Chair with Michelle Garneau, advancing research on wetlands, carbon & nature-based climate solutions. Huge thanks to our MELCCFP partners and Léonie, our research coordinator! Photos from last Thursday’s launch! carclique.uqam.ca

Hey #EGU26! Got Peat? The McMaster Ecohydrology Lab has a talk and poster in the HS10.3 Peatland hydrology session on Friday. #PeatSky #peatlands #ecohydrology #resilience #earlywarningsignals Join us for a discussion on early warning signals in peatland ecosystems at poster A.64
2 more sites (bog and a fen) instrumented for our new project yesterday!
☀️ #EGU26 starts TODAY and ICOS is in Vienna all week! We have sessions organised by ICOS community and project partners on urban greenhouse gases, forest carbon, flux networks and more. Updated list of ICOS contributions have been highlighted here 👉 icos-cp.eu/news-and-events/events/icos-egu26
ICOS at EGU26
The EGU General Assembly 3-8 May 2026 brings together geoscientists from all over the world to one meeting covering all disciplines of the Earth, planetary, and space sciences. The EGU aims to provide a forum where scientists can present their work and discuss their ideas with experts in all fields of geoscience.

Looking forward to the peaty #EGU starting tomorrow with our session (oral: 8:30 pm, posters in the afternoon). Due to an unfortunate overlap with „BG8.11: Peatland mapping,…“, we propose a common „lunch poster session“ to enable more interaction. Bring some🥪🍎🥤and join us in hall X1! #EGU26
#EGU has become a great event for peatlanders. If you work on #paludiculture, restoration or managed peatlands, our session at #EGU26 might be the one for you: 👉 meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU26/sessio... @tannebergerf.bsky.social, Łukasz Kozub, Hanna Silvennoinen, Sue Page @egubg.bsky.social
Peatlands store more carbon than the world's forests yet fundamental questions remain unanswered. Today we publish 50 priority research questions, identified by 467 participants from 54 countries #PeatQuest #Peatlands www.nature.com/articles/s43...
Very excited to be working in this beautiful marsh site this summer (photo from last year from @knowyouronion.bsky.social) with a new masters student joining my group!
Google suggests the Congo is the world's largest #peatland. This is wrong! For details of the world’s largest peatland complexes, & as a ref for anyone wanting to avoid error-ridden AI search tools, I have manually searched the available literature. See Peatpedia for the results: lnkd.in/gTi32rGX
New in AGU Advances: a community vision for a sustained, actionable greenhouse gas observing system. We highlight how tighter integration of top-down and bottom-up approaches can sharpen attribution and bring carbon information closer to management scales. doi.org/10.1029/2025... #GHG #Carbon
2025 #NobelPeatPrize (Outreach) Peat Colours! The “Tracking the Colours of Peatlands” outreach and citizen science initiative explores and communicates peatland science through peat pics. Congrats @wetlandresilienceresearchgroup.com The #NobelPeatPrize (McMaster) will be announced Dec 10th.
This is another flux tower we installed this spring/summer for the @carbonique.bsky.social project. This time the tower was installed on a floating platform in a restored marsh near Baie-du-Febvre. Thank you to my colleague Léonie @cpaleolab.bsky.social for putting together this video 💚

So excited #PEATcalendar is back for 2026! 🎉 Look at all the animals and critters you can find in a peatland 🐻🐍🦆🦡🕸️ The sea urchin might be a bit surprising? Get a calendar to learn how it ended up in a peatland. Thanks to everyone who contributed photos for the calendar! #PeatECR #PeatSky
Voilá! 🎉 #PeatECR (peatecr.com) is excited to announce that the #2026PeatECRCalendar is officially ready! This year’s calendar showcases 12 stunning peatland wild life photographs contributed by peatland researchers.
