Got the idea from reading @koshersoul.bsky.social 's The Cooking Gene where he talks about Gadsden's Wharf, a site of historic enslaved importation. It irritated me that Ellis Island is so well known but not other gateways. What does that say about migration historiography + constitutional memory?

Starting lit review for the 3rd book on American gateway cities. Bimodal distribution of all Ellis Island or Angel Island. No discussions of port cities w/enslaved importation or Native American presence. It's b/c academic fields are siloed. Defining immigration as only voluntary limits the view. 1/
