Hong Kong journalist covering politics and diplomacy from London

If you're reading this, my cat and I have boarded a one-way flight out of the United States. The Trump administration wrongfully denied my work permit renewal; after months of demanding that they follow the law, we have run out of legal recourse, and I have no choice but to leave the country. (🧵)

My latest piece for @indexoncensorship.org looks into the >50 event cancellations since 2021 which are because of political issues: The use of the excuse “force majeure” has been on the rise, as the organisers can’t publicly explain where the pressure comes from

In #HongKong, the authorities are using the blanket term of force majeure to stifle events and voices which they find uncomfortable. Journalist @krislc.bsky.social reports ⬇️ www.indexoncensorship.org/2025/12/in-h...

Very honoured to write and edit of this “special edition” of Apple Daily for @rsf.org , marking the 4th anniversary of its forced closure. Remember the journalists & press freedom defenders still in jail - some may be out next month, some will take a few more years.

#HongKong: 4 years after #AppleDaily was shut down, its spirit lives on. RSF and exiled staff have published a special edition honouring media in Hong Kong that continue to resist repression. 7 staff remain jailed and face life imprisonment, including founder #JimmyLai. 🔗 rsf.org/en/four-year...

My new piece for @asia.nikkei.com - @werahobhouse.bsky.social says UK has to be tougher on its red lines. “If they don't let politicians from the UK in, well then, we shouldn’t let some politicians from China in either.” She urges China Audit to be published asap. asia.nikkei.com/Politics/Int...

Just in: Wokingham is the first UK local council to pass a motion against the "Chinese Super Embassy", tabled by ex- Hong Kong democrat turned Lib-dem councillor Andy Ng. "This isn't just about a building, but what it represents...transnational repression," he said.

Little update: I am ok. Thanks for your support. I am proud of the work I’ve done for VOA in the past four years, covering what cannot be said in Hong Kong. I hope we can continue our work soon, as there’s still a lot of work to do.

For more than a month, I was investigating the Chinese student rapist Zhenhao Zou for @dailymail.co.uk. We managed to speak to 14 people who knew him, including two who narrowly escaped his evil acts—had they been less careful, their fate could have been different www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article...

The Chinese PhD student with dark desire to drug and rape

PhD student Zhenhao Zou was convicted of 11 rapes against ten women, but police fear he may have attacked a further 50 - with around half this number in London and the other half in his native China.

Exclusive: A resident in Carmen Lau's area received a letter from Hong Kong urging them to "take her to Chinese Embassy" for HK$1M reward. The letter's format is exactly same as that for Tony Chung, as both are wanted by the Hong Kong police. www.voacantonese.com/a/exclusive-...
