If you’ve ever tried writing grants for a nonprofit you know how incredible this is. People work for weeks on proposals, jumping thru hoops to funds like Chan Zuckerberg asking for crumbs only to be rejected. And Scott just…throws money at orgs bc that’s what a good person does.

I taught our first Undergraduate Composition Seminar of the term today & folks: holy shit these composers are an utter DELIGHT. To be fair, I’m overly ridiculous. So maybe they compensated, as a collective, for my clown-car teaching style, but STILL. What a privilege to work with such DELIGHTS.
Never forget 9/11, but also how big of a part that day played in the xenophobia moving forward, who we were told to be afraid of, who weren't allowed to travel into the U.S., who were deemed "terrorists." As we remember the lives lost, remember those whose lives were harmed.

The thing liberals fundamentally don't understand is that trans people are losing rights they already had. We're not asking for more, we're asking not to lose what we already had for decades. Most sports leagues and the Olympics had inclusion criteria for decades without issue.

About to start my day of teaching, & 3/4 students requested we zoom for our lessons because they’re not feeling well. Colleague in another (much larger) department says both strep & covid are spreading quickly. Awesome. I pretty much mask whenever I’m in the building year-round now.

Every summer we take my cognitively disabled son to the shore of Lake Michigan for a week. We stay in our favorite little motel, we spend days at the enormous public beach. And we get LOTS of exceptional pizza from a local joint. It’s bliss. Mid-August, 2026, Michigan’s West Coast
Our oldest was born in a hospital with a McDonald’s. I was sent downstairs not long after the birth with orders to return with sacks of burgers and fries.

I love re-upping this: for decades the main library at UCLA had the generic name University Research Library because the person most responsible for getting it built was an English professor named Hugh G. Dick and the university refused to name it after him.

Jonathan Ladd@jonathanmladd.com · 2w agoSome thoughts on higher ed: 1) Remember, lots of college students go to some type of public college, paying in-state tuition. 2) Overall, prices have slightly declined in the last decade. Yet they were already very high, driven by Baumol's cost disease and reduced subsidies to public colleges.
