Alex Rabinowitch has passed away. His revolutionary The Bolsheviks Come to Power remains, 50 years later, a classic study of the Bolshevik Party in 1917. I am proud to have known this generous man personally, and only regret that I never had the chance to congratulate him on his final book.

A quick wrap-up of the conference Spaces by Yerevan Center for International Education. Now Yerevan is a place where the world shrinks into a single room and time zones don't matter. I was glad to present my paper on "inner emigration" in such a borderless space. Thank you, YCIE!

A house on Aram Street in Yerevan. The memorial plaque reads: "In this house, Aram Manukyan, the founder of the Republic of Armenia, lived and died in 1917-1919." A few dozen meters from the house stands a newly erected monument to Manukyan.
At the Armenian Genocide Museum, there's a wall with portraits of the perpetrators. Visitors created a raw hierarchy of accountability by the number of scratches on them. The Young Turk triumvirate of Pashas took the biggest hit, especially Interior Minister Talaat.
Visited the Soviet Occupation Museum in Tbilisi. The exhibit focuses on the faces of those who resisted the Soviet regime. Yet, one central face of this history has vanished. Photos: before/after
