There is no version of yourself you could become that would satisfy the people who hate you. So you might as well be who you are.
This is, and I am not even joking, going to fuck up so many hyperlexic kids. I got accused of plagiarism because I used the word “porous” in a sixth grade paper and that shit sticks with you, if not on the permanent record, then in the childhood.
oh come on
I may not be able to ride a bike (yet), but I can sure analyze bike data, and now you can too (or, at least, easier)! kurtraschke.com/2026/07/citi... github.com/kurtraschke/...

I now fervently believe this. Relatedly, I think celebrating good news and embracing joy are equally radical. You have to remember what you’re fighting for. We cannot sustainably organize around sorrow.
I’m coming to understand that maintaining hope is radical.
feels like as good a time as any to dust off and update my montage of every annual report of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey
We just increased the maximum number of pinned chats from 4 to 10, so you can show 6 more people how much you love what they have to say.
Are you one of those people who thinks "it's okay for me to use local timestamps in this system; it will only ever operate in one time zone"? Guess what! You're still going to have problems over DST transitions.
“The people who made New York what it is are people like the ones who live in the large Chinese immigrant community near my neighborhood. Or people who moved here from Puerto Rico, as Lopez’s parents did. Or people who moved here from Mexico, or from Italy. Orfrom Virginia, Florida, Ohio, Wisconsin”

It took me a while to realise that when American friends spoke of the need for more walkable cities in certain parts of the US, they often didn't mean more and better footpaths so much as "You literally cannot move around on foot here. Please fix that."
The World Cup is about celebrating exotic host nation cultures
hey. you. yes, you! do you have a friend whom you're in awe of (and maybe a little jealous of) for changing their name or their pronouns or their appearance seemingly with impunity and you wish you, too, were Queer Enough or Hip Enough to pull that off? newsflash: you can too!
The phrase "Ability To Function Despite Imminent Catastrophe" will always be funny to me but I don't actually like feeling that way...
Gene Kranz was right: “Let's solve the problem but let's not make it any worse by guessing.”
I wrote about the teens taking over malls and milling about in public spaces and why I think cops and curfews are the reason they do so in the first place: www.chron.com/culture/arti...
Why is Houston, America terrified of teens going to the mall?
Teenagers are in desperate need of places to gather. Curfews and cops may not be the answer.

Okay. So. As of today it has been 229 days since my last haircut. This is 2.5x my post-pandemic average and nearly 8x my pre-pandemic average! But, it’s starting to get hot out, and the era of Big Hair is coming to an end (much to the chagrin of some of my friends).
I wrote about why I quit my job, and how weird and tiring tech feels these days.
Do I belong in tech anymore?
On quitting, the spread of AI, and the loss of an ideal.

"Benches are where optimistic visions of civic life meet reality. To remove them, or to curate who gets to sit, is to abandon the work of defining a civic ideal and determining, together, how to live up to it." NEW: Why benches are slowly disappearing from public spaces — and why we need them back:
The Disappearance of the Public Bench
Benches are microcosms of an expansive debate about who belongs in urban public spaces. When they are removed or made uninviting, we lose more than just a place to rest.

TIL that the term "planned obsolescence" was in use at least as far back as 1963!

sometimes it's the really simple things, like ordering food for pickup while you're still a few stops away on transit and having it become ready just as you arrive.
I have just discovered the @1password.bsky.social SDK for Python (github.com/1Password/on...), and I love that I no longer have to worry about accidentally publishing credentials because it becomes LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE. Need a connection to @clickhouse.com? There it is!
