An age-old academic question: is this manuscript done (submission ready) or am I just done looking at it?
Every person killed in these strikes has been 'illegally killed.' Imagine needing a "careful review of confidential documents" to reach the conclusion that extrajudicial executions might be illegal.
The US military’s strikes on alleged drug boats have likely illegally killed “individuals who are not involved in narcotrafficking,” Sen. Tim Kaine told the White House, following “a careful review” of classified information he has seen so far.
US policy depends on hubris and pride about as much as oil and microchips, so it makes sense to target them as strategic resources.
I don't think the average American and certainly not the average MAGA even gets the extent to which "humiliate your foe" is a core ethos of the Iranian approach to conflict
"The party decides" vs "the party is a bunch of morons"
Is Gillibrand on crack? Why was she telling donors, without a shred of evidence, that Mallory McMorrow is a DSA member???
When you Project 2025 too close to the sun
New Heritage staffers are “More MAGA than Trump.”
It sounds like silly, but... Making some new clips for TV and Twitter.
so does any body know what the objective is of this new bombing campaign
Out with the constitutional crisis, in with the "even the fucking Articles of Confederation dealt with this one" stage of things.
I can't stress enough what a crisis this is. Trump's own intelligence agencies concluded that Iran attacked Minnesota's critical infrastructure and Trump is saying that it's Minnesota's own fault and denying it was Iran. The federal government won't defend blue states in a literal war.
The "flat prose" bit is the cherry on top. "We were bidding millions of dollars on a book and then realized the writing sucks" is silly, LLM or not.
👀 Fascinated by the "withdrawn by its agents" detail. So the AI use was so blatant that the agents due a huge payday preemptively withdrew the contract?
Not entirely unprecedented. Joe Colombo ran a similar fundraising operation.
Four-byline alert: 🚨 “.. no sitting American president has ever raised these amounts for his pet projects. .. Trump has been demanding large checks .. telling executives and lobbyists that their companies should give $25 million or $50 million.” @wsj.com www.wsj.com/politics/pol...
"Growing the sport" means getting the US into the semifinals, whatever it takes.
conspiracy theorists: Fifa is trying to help Argentina win the World Cup! Fifa: how about we organise the next tournament without Europe?
The current US attacks on the ICC make the Bush-era BIA's look like child's play & won't stop soon. Supporting the Court requires more than providing resources (& sanctions relief), although that is important. It requires dedicated diplomacy supporting the ICC members most exposed to US pressure.
oh my god
The next step is convincing the US to boycott the UNSC, à la the USSR in 1950.
The USA just walked out of the UNSC? Just plain ol’ walked out? What a stupid dangerous time we live in
No matter what you thought of the movie, we can all agree that "Nobody fucks and the food looks like shit" is an A+++ bit to include in a LRB movie review, right?
oh yeah but what does she even know about the odyssey (checks author on book) oh wait (flips through pages increasingly frantically) oh god
Hey, can someone in the neighborhood stop by and do a quick check-in on New Zealand?
The small group that voted against an extension of the UN human rights chief’s mandate includes the 🇺🇸 , 🇷🇺 , 🇰🇵 , 🇮🇱 , 🇦🇷 and 🇲🇱. France was not amused, stating: “The US used to be a beacon of human rights. Not anymore… And the world no longer listens to it.”
Saw (and enjoyed) The Odyssey and wow, I had forgotten how much of the story is "here's a bunch of guys who can't read a room/take a hint"
A great test for "how many folks overestimate their javelin abilities."
Finally, someone asking the important questions
Public displays (beach fly-bys), vanity projects (the "battleship"), and cooking the books. The Pentagon is full steam ahead on the authoritarian military project.
The continuing Pentagon coverup of the Iran War disaster: they’re now cutting the death count for official records.
So, about Michigan...
The latest round of Trump tariffs are pretty amazing. If they go forward North America will no longer have an integrated car production industry but country-by-country silos. Which also means... a lot less car production. www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/...
"I've noticed that you (the mayor of NYC) often deflect to talking about what New Yorkers want" is 10/10, chef's kiss, no notes
His answer on how you define “working class” gets at something too many pundits and politicians forget: The raw numbers might matter for policy, but for politics, it’s more important to speak to how people *feel* about their ability to afford the life they want.
Why not future proof it a bit? Establish a Ministry of What's Happening Now and you can shift it to match the trend of the week.
Minister for AI to sit in Cabinet 👀 www.thetimes.com/article/c10e...
People think bisexuality is about sexual attraction but it's actually about lighting. The "bi" in bisexuality refers to one being both in and out of a shadow, as Newsweek's cover illustrates.
on this day in 1995, scientists discovered bisexuality. happy 31st birthday to all my fellow bs
New separation of powers just dropped.
Really weird that Todd Blanche claims he can't open an investigation given that there is sworn testimony that his enforcer Aakash Singh has been opening investigations around the country. I guess what he meant is he can only do that if Trump tells him too? www.ms.now/news/todd-bl...
Originalists in shambles, since "endless 'Italian' food" is the sort of thing that would've scared half the framers to death.
White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson: "I saw a tweet yesterday from Olive Garden that in order to take advantage of their never-ending pasta pass, you have to show photo ID. I thought, that's weird, Olive Garden takes pasta pass security more seriously than Democrats take election security."
With some shared strategies and some distinct, the US and UK are in a darkly impressive higher education race to the bottom.
Congrats we just made it impossible to come here for a PhD www.bostonglobe.com/2026/07/16/m...
In general, I think calling it the "Department of War" is fucking dumb. But when they're planning an out-an-out war of aggression, it's a bit rich to call them "defense officials."
“…including an Army-led air assault involving thousands of U.S. soldiers to be carried out by the 101st Airborne Division”
