The labor librarian

Grew up in a UFW/IWW household. Now I’m a public to academic librarian, union thug, and general roustabout. Anonymous because I’m not tenured yet. Pro-Palestinian, pro-trans, anti-racist, and not fit for human consumption.

A lot of people are going to try and insist in about six hours that being outspent by tens of millions of dollars and winning by five to possibly fifteen points is actually not that big of a deal

How Elite Colleges Aided Censorship During the Red Scares

Powerful organizations during the Red Scares crafted a world where “academic freedom” was conditional on political allegiance.

And of course, the many anti-LGBTQ actions under his leadership, including attacks on pro-LGBTQ protesters against an anti-trans rally, his decision to promote an anti-trans cop who nearly ran over protesters in 2020 over a well-liked gay officer, and cops hassling sunbathers at a gay nude beach.

For the past 19 months, I've been covering Barnes' controversies, including the fact that he is out of town much of the time, his lengthy refusal to meet with the head of our CARE Team, his decision to vastly expand his executive staff, his taking of a $50K bonus meant for rank and file cops....

One last Baldwin quote in celebration of his 102nd birthday. This is probably the one I think about most often. “I imagine one of the reasons people cling to their hates so stubbornly is because they sense, once hate is gone, they will be forced to deal with pain.”

Between the 1970s and 1990s the UK state made a strategic bet to expand Higher Ed. They poured in untold billions of your money. Now it's been handed over to private creditors to burn in a furnace. Then they just laugh at you: at all the taxes you've ever paid or will ever pay. True story. (2/2)

"You think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read. It was books that taught me that the things that tormented me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, who had ever been alive." -James Baldwin

Disagree w/Wilson from the left on stuff like surveillance cams but know that she is as progressive as we're gonna get in a citywide position & every day she doesn't do the stupid do-nothing status quo shit Harrell did as effortlessly as breathing is a win for the city. Let her cook, fuck the haters

Follow up to yesterday’s cover letter advice to #mlis grads: In the US, do not ever, ever, ever put your picture on your resume. Ever. Avoid fancy fonts, background photos/vibrant colors, and weird resume formats. Do not get lured in by Canva resume templates! They are not your friends!

It's so god damn predictable. Go to a progressive space, spout dogwhistles and bigotry, get called out for it, run to Fox News claiming to be a victim, and get the issue turned into a national culture war news cycle. It's the same playbook as the campus speech stuff.

There are no trans athletes at a serious competitive level anywhere in the US. Bans from sporting bodies apply now to amateur and recreational leagues so trans athletes are banned from those too. So what is there even to supposedly protest? Y'all won and still can't shut up about it.

I know I’m officially old because I finally see the value of cover letters. Related: #mlis grads, I am literally begging you to read the job posting before applying. I want so badly to give y’all a chance. But you have to prove you know what job you’re applying for (🧵)

My favorite part of academic employment is having the university’s marketing team insist on publishing a press release for the libraries that you didn’t ask for, sending you some AI-written slop, and then expecting you to correct it.
